It has been a good time on the bowling green for the players at Frome Park, especially the men.
In the National Two Fours competition, Frome Park having already had some good wins under their belt, faced an experienced side from Bloomfield and took full advantage of the home draw by playing extremely well in securing a very dominant victory. Both rinks outplayed their opponents to win overall by 44-18, the rinks were John Curtis, Terry Drew, Trevor Elms and Steve West 24-5 and Keith McLeod, Eddie Maidment, Colin Henning and Mike Gulliford 20-13.
An excellent result now means a difficult away trip to play Bath “A” in the next round. Their hosts are a Premier League team and the Park will hope they can reproduce their current good form to put in a strong challenge.
The men’s A team continued their good form in County League East 1, with their third win on the trot away at Prattens. The match was very close but the park men prevailed to win overall by 59-53 to pick up 10 points. The best rink for Frome was Norman Seviour, Eddie Maidment, Wayne Pitts and Mike Gulliford who easily beat their opponents to secure a 33-6 win. In East 2 the “B” team had a weakened team due to several players being unavailable and predictably lost to Norwest “B” on all three rinks.
In the Mid-Somerset midweek league, Frome Park men have secured two wins, firstly at home against Shepton Mallet, winning on two rinks and picking up 12 points. This was followed up by another home win against Street, this time winning overall by 74-64 and picking up another 12 points. The best rink for the park was John Curtis, Kim Pitts, John Pritchard and Steve West who bowled well as a team to produce a convincing win by 29-14.
The only negative was a friendly against Yeovil which ended in defeat by 67 shots to 78. The Frome side only had one winning rink, Norman Seviour, Alan Cottle, Wayne Pitts and Mike Gulliford who secured victory 24-14 with some good bowling, especially picking up 7 shots in two ends late in the game.
The mixed teams have had a few ups and downs. In the MSL Mixed league there was a disappointing defeat against Castle Cary where the park only got two points from the only winning rink of Peter Wheeler, Gloria Buchan, John Curtis and John Pritchard who won 21-14. The team then bounced back to beat Fosseway in their next league match, winning on two rinks and overall by 67-46, to pick up 10 points. The best rink on this occasion was Julie Hunt, Alan Cottle, Richard Phillips and Alan Totterdell who overcame a slow start when going behind by 5 shots early on to then take control of the game and go on to win comfortably by 31-12.
The mixed team have also played a couple of friendlies, firstly a victory was achieved after a close encounter with Warminster, winning 75-69 overall. There was three winning rinks for the park, two of them were very close but the decisive win by 27-15 went to the rink of Malcolm Jepson, Myra Drew, Les Stather and Peter Jennings. The other friendly ended in a disappointing defeat away at Wilton, the home side proving far too strong and winning on all four rinks to run out victors by 82 shots to 58.
