Heritage Lottery funding to tell the story of Frome’s famous J.W. Singer & Sons

Rook Lane Arts Trust has been successful in securing significant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, allowing work to start  this autumn on ‘Casting the World: The Story of J.W. Singer & Sons of Frome.’

The project will take place next year, and mark the bicentenary of the birth of John Webb Singer in 1819, founder of J.W. Singer & Sons Art Metal Works. At its height, the factory employed as many as 700 people in the town and cast statues and sculptures which can be found across the country and around the world.

The project will have access to the Singers’ archive of glass plate negatives held by Frome Museum, and will shine a light on this collection which is of national importance. These remarkable images show the craftsmen and apprentices involved in the highly skilled casting work that took place in the heart of Frome – skills that attracted the most famous sculptors of the day to choose Singers in Frome as the place to get their work cast.

Works cast at Singers in Frome include many of our most iconic public statues, war memorials and civic works, from Boudica on the Thames Embankment in London, the friezes at the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle to the figure of Justice that crowns the Old Bailey.

The people of Frome would give these immense statues a send off by cheering them on their way through Frome town centre as they were pulled by horse and cart from the Singers’ works at Waterloo to the railway station.

Chair of trustees, Martin Bax said, “As an organisation, Rook Lane Arts are immensely proud to have been successful with our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“This is an extremely important community project which we hope will bring greater recognition to the legacy of J.W. Singer & Sons, as well as flagging up the incredible archive of glass plate negatives housed at Frome Museum.”

The funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund will allow Rook Lane Arts to work with local organisations and the wider community to interpret and explain the history of Singers’ foundry, which grew from humble beginnings, casting brass candlesticks for local churches from their first shop at 25 Market Place, now the Frome Festival office, to being recognised as one of the most prestigious foundries in the world.

‘Casting the World’ will bring this unique and significant part of Frome’s rich history and cultural heritage to life for Frome audiences through exhibitions at Rook Lane Chapel and Frome Museum, as well as activities and community celebration events throughout 2019, particularly during the Frome Festival, whose theme will be the bicentenary of the birth of John Webb Singer. The project will also be accompanied by an education programme devised with Frome Learning Partnership and a publication supported by the Frome Society for Local Study.

Top: Boudica and her daughters, being re-assembled prior to its departure from Singer’s. Started in 1850 by Thomas Thorneycroft, completed by his son Hamo Thorneycroft and cast at Singer’s circa 1897. It was eventually erected on the Thames Embankment by Westminster Bridge in May 1902 and remains one of London’s most popular and iconic public sculptures.

Above: Statues cast at Singer’s await their departure, c.1910. As well as the eight lions by J. M. Swan, bound for the Cecil Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town; central is the figure of Sir Daniel Dixon, Mayor of Belfast, by Hamo Thorneycroft, which resides in the grounds of Belfast City Hall; far right Sir George Livesey, pioneer of gas production, by Frederick Pomeroy, to be found in the grounds of the now closed Livesey Museum, London. Also visible some of the 150 lion’s head mooring rings  (by Gilbert Hayes) that Singer’s cast for the former County Hall, London, that adorn both sides of the Thames Embankment.

  • Batsford Timber celebrates 37 years in business

Family-run timber business Batsford Timber is marking 37 years in business, continuing to serve customers across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

Known for reliable service and quality products, the company offers a wide range of fencing and outdoor timber materials, along with onsite commercial timber treatment solutions, giving customers everything they need under one roof.

Founded in 1989 by Bob Clark, a fencing contractor working across the Midlands and Cotswolds, the company was born out of frustration at the difficulty of sourcing reliable, high-quality fencing and timber materials. • Frome teen wins pickleball silver after injury comeback

A teenager from Frome has won a silver medal at a national pickleball championship just months after returning to the sport following a serious arm injury.

Kai Santano, 15, competed in the Young Persons Championships at Courtside in Stourbridge in June, taking second place in the mixed-age doubles category alongside 11-year-old Seb Oprea.

The result comes only four months after Kai returned to play following surgery for a double break to his left arm and a partial wrist dislocation, sustained while skateboarding in Victoria Park just one week before he was due to compete in the National Championships.

His mum Laurie said, “He absolutely destroyed his arm and was in a full cast from October until December. He wasn’t allowed to do any contact sports until 1st February. He’s done really well to get back into it.”

  • Mark of excellence awarded to Frome green spaces

An international mark of excellence for parks and green spaces has been awarded to Frome’s Victoria Park and Mary Baily Playing Field.

The Green Flag Award was presented after judges visited in April, who explored the wide range of activities, facilities and community projects that take place across the parks and how they are managed by Frome Town Council.

Assessors praised the parks’ welcoming atmosphere, strong community involvement and features such as the toddler play area, community bowls club, murals, a carved bench created from a heritage tree felled in 2025 due to a fungal infection and the community cafe.
