New ‘Escape Pain’ course for osteoarthritis sufferers

Health Connections Mendip will be running another of their popular ‘Escape Pain’ courses at the Frome Medical Centre building at Enos Way in June.

The organiser of the course is Jo Fordham, a health connector, who has been working at Health Connections for the last four years.

“The course is aimed at people who have osteoarthritis of the knees and the hips,” explains Jo. “The Escape Pain course is not a magic wand. It cannot make pain ‘disappear’. However, what the course does aim to do is give patients coping strategies in dealing with their condition.”

The course runs for six weeks with two weekly sessions. Jo describes the course as being partly about doing the right physical exercise and also instilling the right level of self-management, looking at areas from diet and lifestyle, to medicines prescribed.

“By the end of the course, patients understand that by doing the correct physical exercises, they are then strengthening the muscles,” adds Jo. “However, it is far more than just physical exercise, it is also all about regaining confidence and self-esteem. From those that attended the last course, the feedback was extremely positive.”

One of the participants on Jo Fordham’s last Escape Pain class was Dr Rebecca Hall, a GP at the Frome Medical Practice, but on this occasion attending as a patient and not as a doctor.

“As an arthritis-suffering GP, I was really impressed,” comments Dr Hall. “Jo is very good at leading the group and it felt both inclusive and challenging. The course combines physical exercise and discussion around set topics each week. It was also telling how all the group were still attending each class throughout the whole course.”

However, places are limited on the course and to be eligible you must have a diagnosis of osteoarthritis of either the knee or hip, be over 45 years of age and be a registered patient at a Mendip GP practice.

To find out more information contact Jo Fordham and the team at mendip.healthconnections@nhs.net or tele phone 01373 468368.

  • Former Pizza Hut restaurant could become tanning salon

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

A former Pizza Hut restaurant at Wessex Fields business park could be turned into a tanning salon if plans are approved.

Pizza Hut operated from Unit 1 of Enterprise House within the Wessex Fields business park in Frome until 2020, closing its doors forever during the coronavirus pandemic.

The unit was subsequently occupied by the Dough & Co pizza company, until they in turn vacated the premises in 2022.

Consol Ltd. has now applied to convert the premises into a tanning salon with Somerset Council expected to make a final decision early in the new year.

  • Frome Wild Bunch Column – Round-up of the year

Hello, this is Jo from the Wild Bunch.

What a year 2025 has been for the Wild Bunch and all wildlife gardeners! Once again, our Wild Bunch community has shown what can happen when people choose to garden with nature rather than against it. Together we’ve created countless pockets of habitats that combined make a real ecological impact.

This year the Wild Bunch held 12 Wild Bunch gatherings, welcoming both longstanding members and plenty of new faces. Each session brought something different, from hedgehog habitats and pond-building, climate-friendly gardening, composting for wildlife, to new and innovative gardening techniques such as Hugerkultur. As always, the generosity in sharing knowledge and experiences has been the heartbeat of this group.

  • Have your say on Somerset Council’s budget

Residents and businesses are encouraged to take part in Somerset Council’s annual budget consultation.

In previous years the budget consultation has helped councillors understand people’s views and priorities as they have taken difficult decisions to save millions of pounds and avoid the threat of a Section 114 Notice – this similar to a bankruptcy notice for councils, issued when they can no longer balance their budgets.

Budget proposals discussed at the Executive meeting on 3rd December show the council is facing a £73m budget gap for 2026-27, reflecting ongoing pressures in areas like social care, children’s services and homelessness, combined with uncertainty in government funding.

  • New mural creates buzz at Mary Baily Field

A new nature-themed mural has appeared in the Mary Baily Field, featuring bees pollinating flowers and plants.

The mural is the work of aerosol artist Jody Thomas, commissioned by Frome Town Council.

Cllr Mark Dorrington said, “Thanks to Jody for creating this fantastic new mural, brightening the park and bringing sunshine at the darkest time of the year.”

Jody Thomas is a Bristol-based artist and designer. He has exhibited in New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, London and Bristol. His work takes inspiration from fashion and film and takes a strong, graphic and noirish take on photorealistic portraits.

A conference exploring how climate action can support healthier communities was held at Wesley Methodist Church, organised by Green and Healthy Frome.

The event brought together organisations, practitioners and commu-nity groups for a day that looked at how local work on climate, wellbeing and community development connects. Organisers said the gathering aimed to show what can happen when environmental and social needs are considered together.

A member of the Green and Healthy Frome team Annabel Crooke said, “Attendees were thanked for ‘showing up both literally and figuratively’ and for bringing curiosity, honesty and renewed energy to the challenges and opportunities of our time.

  • Frome resident inspires walking challenge with new book

A Frome resident’s walking guidebook has inspired a local man to walk 145 miles and complete a special geocaching challenge hidden within its pages.

John Price’s book, Family Days in the Wylye Valley, features 25 local walks, five of which include details of a hidden geocache. A geocache is a small container hidden near the walk, which can be found using a smartphone.

Local resident Mike Shorey bought the book in May to improve his fitness. Since then, he has completed all 25 walks, uncovering the five geocaches that together revealed the name of a mystery local village. His efforts earned him a £50 prize voucher from the Prince Leopold Inn.

  • Three generations of Frome artists in cafe exhibition

An exhibition bringing together the work of three generations of artists from the same family is due to run at a cafe on Cheap Street from January to March.

The exhibition titled ‘Jubilee’ will be shown at Cafe La Strada, bringing together three generations of painters and photographers from the same Frome family – Clive Walley, Django Lewis-Clark and Dave Clark.

The title of the exhibition marks 25 years since the family first arrived in Frome.

Clive has a wealth of experience in art production. From commissions as an Art Animator for the BBC, Channel 4 and S4C to his ongoing exploration of the meaning of visual representation contained within his current body of work, Clive has contributed to the artistic life of Frome through his work with the Black Swan Arts and his promotion of the work of other local artists.
