  • Public meeting to decide fate of Saxonvale site next month

By Local Democracy Reporter Daniel Mumby

The fate of the Saxonvale regeneration site in Frome town centre will be decided at a public meeting of Somerset Council’s executive committee on Wednesday 23rd September.

Mayday Saxonvale has been seeking for several years to implement its vision for the brownfield site, which includes more than 260 homes, commercial space, a cultural centre and a lido.

Attempts to redevelop the site have been subject to numerous delays, with Somerset Council’s executive committee voting in late-October 2025 to put the land on the open market after Mayday Saxonvale struggled to come up with the necessary funds to acquire it.

  • Flood defence repair work beguins at Welshmill

Work to repair a flood defence structure at Welshmill began on 17th August, with the project expected to continue until the end of September.

The repairs will strengthen the riverbank protection structure, which helps reduce flood risk by protecting the riverbank from erosion.

The work, commissioned by the Environment Agency and delivered by contractors AMCOGiffen, will include repairing damaged stonework, installing permanent support piles at the base of the structure and stabilising areas affected by erosion.

For safety reasons, the riverside footpath will be diverted through Welshmill Park play area during construction. Cyclists should continue along Welshmill Lane and Welshmill Road before rejoining the riverside path 100m upstream.

  • Life-saving equipment to be installed in town centre

A bleed control kit and defibrillator will be installed at the Nationwide branch in Frome.

The equipment will be installed on an external wall of the Grade II listed building in Market Place as part of a national rollout by the building society.

To help build public confidence in using the equipment, Nationwide is also working with St John Ambulance to roll out volunteer-led training in life-saving skills. This will be offered to employees before expanding into Heart of Community sessions, giving local people the knowledge and confidence to carry out CPR, use defibrillators and understand how to treat a severe bleed in an emergency.

Amanda Beech, Nationwide’s director of retail services, said, “Nationwide’s unique reach as the UK’s largest branch network gives us the ability to put life-saving equipment where it matters most - in places people already know and trust in their communities. By transforming our branches into visible, emergency hubs, we’re making it easier to access help when every second counts."
