  • Frome theatre to host regional drama festival final A theatre in Frome is set to host the Western Area final of the All England Theatre Festival on Saturday 16th May. Five winning companies from Somerset, Avon, Bristol and Totton will perform their plays before an experienced Guild of Drama adjudicator, who will then provide constructive feedback on each production. This will cover technical aspects including lighting and sound, set design and costumes, as well as direction and acting. Organisers say, “Join us to watch a wide-ranging choice of plays that will provide an exciting and entertaining day of theatre and see if you agree with the adjudicator.” There will be two performances on 16th May, at 2pm and 7pm.   • Exhibition for arts charity’s 40th year off to strong start A major fundraising exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of Black Swan Arts has got off to a strong start, with half of donated artworks already sold since opening night. More than 100 supporters attended the preview of THINK XL at the arts centre on 3rd April, alongside donating artists and organisers. Since then, organisers say around 50 per cent of works have been purchased, including ‘Paris, 2023’ by Ed Bucklow and ‘The Hunt’ by Gracie House, both among the youngest contributors to the appeal. A total of 40 artists with links to Black Swan Arts since its opening in 1986 have donated work, spanning ceramics, painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and wood carving. The exhibition is raising funds through three price bands, £40, £140 and £400, alongside a silent auction featuring four higher-value works. Sealed bids can be placed in The Long Gallery and will be opened at 3.45pm on Sunday 10th May, the final day of the exhibition. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • New space in Mary Baily taking shape A project to create a new space in Mary Baily Field, co-designed with local young people, is moving into its final stages. Since January, a group of 12 young people aged 14 to 18 have worked with local organisations Woodland Tribe, Super Roots and Neighbourhood Toolbox on the project, which is funded by Frome Town Council. They have been learning about the design and build process, taking part in workshops and visiting sites including sawmills and quarries to learn about sustainable buil-ding materials. The young people’s designs are on display on the noticeboards in Frome Town Hall and the final design and build is expected later in the year. Corinne Sampson of Woodland Tribe said, “The young people have worked really hard and inspired us and each other throughout the process. We can’t wait to turn their ideas into reality and work with them on the building phase, creating this unique, playful space, truly by and for Frome’s young people.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Women-only studio unveils low-impact fitness sessions Spring is always a great time to try something new, and that’s exactly why Hebe-Fitness, a local female-only fitness studio, is launching a brand-new class this month. Balance and Burn is designed specifically for women seeking a more mindful alternative to high-intensity workouts. “It offers a fresh, holistic approach to exercise,” said Stacey St John Marchmont who is owner and head instructor at the studio in The Cornmarket in the centre of Warminster. “It focuses not just on physical strength, but also on stability, control and mental clarity, creating a well-rounded experience for both body and mind. “Blending controlled precision, resilience-building exercises, core strengthening and mindful movement, the class delivers a dynamic yet accessible workout."   • Frome historian launches new book and courses Frome-based author and tutor David Lassman has published a new book about the Great Fire of London and launched several new history and writing courses. The Great Fire of London recounts eyewitness accounts of the devastating event, which occurred 360 years ago. The book is published by Pen & Sword, and is available from most bookshops, including thw town’s own Winstone’s Hunting Raven in Cheap Street. David said, “Hopefully the book will transport readers into the events of early September 1666 to such a degree that you almost feel as if you are witnessing it for yourself.” He has also launched several new courses for Frome Community Education’s summer term.   • Frome’s International Climate Film Festival returns next month The fifth Frome International Climate Film Festival will return next month with over 1,000 entries from around the world. The event will run at the Cheese and Grain on 17th May, showing positive films from around the world about climate, nature and the environment. Director of the festival James Godman said, “Please join us as we come together to connect, share, support and inspire each other as a community. “Also come and meet local activists, passionate people and groups helping change, such as Somerset Wildlife Trust. The event will also include a ‘Climate Circle’ with speakers, a forum where the public can have their voice. We also have local artists from the Peatland Project, local live music and the Climate Awards. Be inspired and take action.” Doors to the festival open at 9.30am.   • Under-14 girls crowned Somerset League Cup winners Frome Town United Under-14 Girls have won the Somerset League Cup. They defeated Midsomer Norton 4-1 on Saturday 18th April at Middlezoy Rovers’ ground. Two first-half goals saw Frome take the lead before their opponents halved the deficit before the break. Frome then sealed the victory with two more second-half strikes to lift the trophy. Frome will face Midsomer Norton again on Friday 8th May at 7:30pm at Welton Rovers ground with a victory confirming them as league champions. “All support would be greatly welcome,” said the club.   • Bramble & Wild is back in Frome! Bramble & Wild has returned to Frome, with a new studio space in the town centre. The popular florists, which began in Catherine Hill in 2011, relocated to Ilminster last September nearer the site of their own flower farm. Now they have also opened back up in Frome at the Black Swan Arts Centre in Bridge Street. “Moving to Ilminster was the right move for our flower growing, but the link with Frome was very hard to break,” said owner Grace Salter Haskins. “With so many of our weddings, events and regular orders still heading back into town each week, it became clear we needed to find a way back. “We’re therefore delighted that Bramble & Wild has taken on a space in the Black Swan Arts Centre, where you’ll find us in Studio 4. Rather than a traditional shopfront, we have an intimate working floral studio, but you’ll still find it filled with the same thoughtful, seasonal flowers we’ve always been known for. “Kirsty will be leading things in Frome and will be in the studio from 10am to 3pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; we also offer deliveries on these days.   • Frome poet brings stand-up show to Silk Mill An award-winning Frome poet is bringing their new stand-up show, Running Commentary, to the Silk Mill, where it will premiere on 5th May ahead of a 21-date UK tour. Poppy Burton-Morgan’s new show explores getting back into fitness and running after a decade without exercise. Organisers say, “41-year-old poet Poppy Burton-Morgan finds themselves newly single and hungry to return to pre-childbirth levels of fitness. Cue Rocky montage but with a middle-aged red-faced mum reciting sonnets on the South West Coast path. So far so solitary until they join their local running club and find themselves drawn into a world of flirting, friendship, fierce competition and the unexpected discovery that they’re ferociously fast.
