18th century farmhouse saved from demolition

LOCAL councillors are celebrating the news that Sandys Hill Lane housing developers have dropped plans to demolish Keyford Farmhouse, a Grade II listed 18th century building.

Planning permission was granted last year for up to 235 houses on the land behind fast-food restaurant McDonald’s. The approval by Mendip District Council also gave the go-ahead for the demolition of Keyford Farmhouse and its outbuildings.

However, in response to concerns about the demolition of the farmhouse and the density of the development, developers Curo have revised their plans.

Instead, the farmhouse and converted barn will be retained and developers plan to reduce the number houses on the site to 198 houses – which will include 47 social rent houses and 12 shared ownership houses.

The developer will also provide a wider green buffer zone around Keyford House, a listed building.

However, access to the site – which last year was criticised for its potential to cause “traffic chaos” – will remain the same as approved last year.

Mendip District councillor for Frome Market, cllr Michael Dunk said, “I have been quietly campaigning within Mendip for a year to save the farmhouse and been in touch with Curo regularly, so I am delighted.

“I even uncovered an ecological report that showed evidence of swallows nesting in several buildings and bat roosts in two of the buildings.”

Mendip District councillor for Frome Keyford, cllr Helen Kay – who argued against demolition at the district council planning board meeting last year – said, “I’m relieved we have a chance to save this recognised heritage asset, although it’s not in the bag yet and we still have the problem of the access road which is often clogged up with traffic to McDonald’s.

“But there are other improvements on the outline scheme, such as social housing that will be managed ‘in perpetuity’, so cannot be bought or sold off.”

“I’m really pleased to see the farmhouse retained,” said Frome Town councillor Richard Ackroyd, at a town council meeting last week, which included a presentation from Curo about their revised plans.

Frome Civic Society has also welcomed the retention of Keyford Farmhouse, which they have described as a “non-designated heritage asset of local significance”.

They said, “We hope that Curo will afford the opportunity for the structure and interior to be examined by a historic building archaeologist in order to fully record any historic evidence before refurbishment or conversion.  It has been identified with a high degree of confidence as the site of the Saxon manor listed in the Domesday book as ‘Chaivert or Cayford’, and known by 1405 as Little Keyford Manor. There is a strong probability that the farmhouse occupies the site of the original manor house. In the 18th century, the complex became the home farm to Keyford House, and in the 19th century, the farmhouse was rebuilt or remodelled in a fashionable gothic style, clearly intended to enhance the view from the gardens of the enlarged and aggrandised (now listed) Keyford House.”

The preview planning document from Curo states, “Over the past few months, we worked with Mendip District Council officers during the pre-application process to refine and improve our proposals, focusing on feedback from local stakeholders and residents….Some of the key changes we made are the retention of Keyford Farmhouse and converted barn, a lower-density development and more protection/buffers for existing properties near the site.

“Our scheme exceeds the requirements of the outline permission for open space and biodiversity enhancements and aims to deliver much-needed new homes in an attractive, architecturally-sensitive and sustainable development for Frome.”

The ‘reserves matter’ application – which includes the changes – was submitted formally to Mendip District Council last week.

  • Wildlife favourite Michaela Strachan set for Frome show

Marking 40 years in the public eye, wildlife TV star Michaela Strachan is bringing her brand-new theatre show to Frome Memorial Theatre next month.

From The Wide Awake Club to The Really Wild Show and Springwatch, Michaela’s new theatre show laughs at the chaos of TV, celebrates the beauty of nature and reflects on what it means to grow up – and grow older – on screen.

The show will be at Frome Memorial Theatre on Tuesday 21st April at 7.30pm.

Organisers say, “It’s a high-energy, funny and heart-warming journey through four decades of conservation and re-invention. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be upstaged by an elephant, wrangle the likes of Chris Packham, or ice skate on national TV looking like Julie Andrews, then this show is for you. Not Just a Wild Life promises an evening of inspiration, nostalgia and genuine connection – for nature nerds, nostalgia lovers and anyone who’s ever wondered how a rubber chicken can change the course of your life."

  • Celebrated local artist’s collection to feature in Dore & Rees Spring auction

The collection of a local Frome artist and collector will be offered for sale at the Dore & Rees Spring Interiors Auction next month.

The auction of Lucy Miranda Sipe’s possessions will take place at the firm’s Frome saleroom on Wednesday 15th April, and includes mid-century furniture, tribal jewellery, spiritual objects and a little bit of witchcraft!

“Lucy Miranda Sipe (1957-2025) was a local artist, botanist and collector,” said Guy Tayler, Head of Interiors at Dore & Rees. “She was creative in almost every field – an illustrator, knitter, jewellery maker, needlewoman, writer and gardener.

“The first thing you saw on entering her home was an eight-foot-high tree made from rope and wood hung with vintage glass decorations. On closer inspection and on reading her accompanying annotated notebook it transpired that she had hand-painted each decoration and detailed every design choice along with the prices and provenance of each figure, and its significance in Eastern European folklore. It’s a completely extraordinary work of art."

The new collection features various Laura Ashley prints on some of their dog walking products, including harnesses with a discreet pocket to safely house an Apple AirTag or similar tracking device, waterproof leads and coordinated dog blankets.

Co-founders Brad and Kayla said this was an ‘exciting milestone’ for the business.

Brad said, “This partnership represents a significant achievement for our small independent business, bringing together a heritage British brand with our locally designed and produced pet accessories.”

  • Acoustic tribute to Joni Mitchell at Cheese and Grain

An intimate acoustic tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell is coming to Frome on 17th April.

The show, ‘This Flight Tonight – the Songs of Joni Mitchell’, will be presented by a five-piece band.

Organisers say, “Established in early 2023, acclaimed songwriters Zervas and Pepper present the show, featuring songs such as ‘California’, ‘Blue’, ‘Woodstock’ ‘Both Sides Now’, ‘Carey’, ‘Coyote’, ‘A Case Of You’, and many more.

“Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential artists of the modern age, rising to stardom in the late 1960s; her music and songwriting is the jewel in the crown of the Woodstock generation. Bursting onto the scene with a sound entirely her own, Joni earned the respect of her musical peers and the love of her audiences worldwide."

  • Frome Drama Club to stage first 80th anniversary show

A local drama group is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary with an upcoming play in April.

Frome Drama will perform Jack Absolute Flies Again from 16th to 18th April at the Merlin Theatre. The performance will be the first of three plays marking the group’s 80th anniversary.

Organisers say, “Written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris, this is a completely hilarious farce set in 1940 at RAF Fontwell during the Battle of Britain. The play is very loosely based on Sheridan’s The Rivals, and features many of the same characters, notably the world-famous Mrs Malaprop, whose mangled verbiage spawned the phrase malapropism. But this version is faster, ruder, funnier and altogether very different from the original.”

The show is recommended for ages 14+. Organisers say, “Come along and support local people in local theatre and keep theatre alive.”

  • Drive-thru outlets planned near Frome

Two drive-thru units, including a coffee shop and a restaurant, along with a petrol station, shop and dog park could be built near Frome.

A planning application has been submitted to Somerset Council by Warleigh Capital, Spectrum Southern Ltd and White Row Country Foods Ltd. It seeks permission to develop approximately 2.55 hectares of currently undeveloped land to the south of Old Warminster Road at White Row Farm. The site is just off the A36, with access to Frome via the White Row Farm roundabout onto the A361.

The developer says the scheme will create 45 jobs and provide an “accessible local service for the local community”, including space for a dog park.

The development would also include an EV charging hub and 70 parking spaces.

  • Record number of teams take part in Clive Lewis Tag Rugby Festival

Young players from across the area took part in the annual Clive Lewis Schools Tag Festival, hosted by Frome Rugby Club last week.

The popular event, played in honour of the late Clive Lewis, a much-loved Frome RFC club legend and local schoolteacher, welcomed the largest number of teams in two decades, with 12 teams taking part. 129 tries were scored in 20 eight-minute games.

“This festival is often the first experience these children have of any competitive activity with other schools,” said Neil Warnock from Frome Rugby Club. “The evidence was clear – they embraced it and had a great time, which is exactly what it’s all about.”

In the Years 5 and 6 competition, Selwood’s three teams – the Bears, Wolves and Leopards – put on an outstanding display, scoring 40 tries between them and each topping their respective pools. Westbury Leigh matched the Leopards in Pool C, while the final between Selwood’s Bears and Wolves ended in a thrilling 3–3 draw.
