FROME Friends of Palestine is offering to pay for a local young person to visit Palestine later in the year.
The group is offering a bursary of £800 to someone in the area aged between 18 and 25 who would like to go and explore the country.
Frome Friends’ Juliet Solomon said, “Palestine is back in the news since the United Nations passed a new resolution calling for Israel to ‘immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.’
“East Jerusalem, which contains some of the holiest sites in Christianity, Judaism and Islam was seized by Israel in the Six-Day War of 1967. Since then, over 800,000 illegal Israeli settlers have moved into occupied Palestine.
“Frome Friends of Palestine, involved in this issue, goes from strength to strength. Our latest project is to award an £800 bursary to a young person aged between 18 and 25 and living within 20 miles of Frome, who is interested in Palestine and would like to go and explore this beautiful and welcoming land.
“The bursary is designed to cover travel and accommodation and the winner will be supported in planning his/her adventure. We expect feedback from the trip.”
Those interested in the trip, from whatever perspectives are asked to submit an essay of around 400 words on ‘Why I want to experience Palestine’ and email it to fromefop@virginmedia.com
The deadline for submission is Tuesday 28th February, after which a shortlist will be drawn up. Candidates will be asked for an interview during the last week of March and the result will be announced by 14th April.
