Our health services are under enormous pressure, but we are open and available say local GPs

GP practices across Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire have issued an open letter to all residents across the region.

They write, “It’s no secret that GP practices in our area are incredibly busy right now, and while we know this may cause some to have concerns about not being able to access care, we want to reassure our communities that we are open.

“However, the pressure we are currently seeing, which stems from a mixture of staff absences, increasing numbers of coronavirus cases and an increase in demand for urgent and emergency care, means we are working in conditions not usually seen outside the middle of winter.

“During August, which is the last full month for which statistics are available, GP practices in our area carried out more than 366,000 appointments, of which more than half (56 per cent) took place in person.

“This is up by more than 50,000 when compared to August of last year, which means our teams are now providing around 2,400 more appointments each day. We know some patients have struggled recently to get through to their practice, and we know this hasn’t been ideal, but please be assured that our practices are open, as they have been throughout the entirety of the pandemic.

“Coronavirus meant that we had to adapt the way we offered appointments, so that we could continue to see patients in a way that kept both patients and our practice staff safe.

“This meant carrying out more telephone and video consultations, which many patients told us they preferred, especially at this current time.

“As well as preventing the need for people to travel, remote appointments give people the convenience of being able to be seen and treated within their own home or at work, while also helping us to avoid having crowded waiting rooms in our practices.

“That does not mean in-person discussions are no longer available – they absolutely are – especially for people with potentially serious health concerns.

“Our GP practices will always offer appointments, either face-to-face, or via remote consultation, with the health and care professional most appropriate for a patient’s needs. We know that people have been hugely supportive of us throughout the pandemic, and we truly appreciate this, but it’s important to remember that Covid-19 has not gone away, and we still need your help.

“When our receptionists ask questions on the phone, this is not a barrier, but an important process to ensure that people are cared for in the most appropriate way, and by the most appropriate professional, such as a physiotherapist, mental health nurse or phlebotomist, all of whom are experts in their area.

“So please be kind, and remember that our administrative teams are here to help, just as much as our clinicians.

“Staying home when feeling under the weather, as well as visiting a local pharmacy for minor illnesses and injuries, keeps more appointments available for those who really need them.

“Many pharmacies also have a private treatment room for confidential consultations and discussions, which can usually be had without an appointment.

“NHS 111 online is a great tool for those thinking about accessing care, but unsure of where to go, as the service provides information and advice specific to a person’s symptoms and, where appropriate, directions to other healthcare options. By taking these steps, as well as taking personal precautions such as having vaccinations for Covid-19 and flu, if eligible, you will be playing your part in supporting your local practice during this exceptionally busy time.

“Our health services are under enormous pressure, but we are open and available.

“Please continue to play your part by being kind to our staff, socially distancing where possible and wearing a face covering in all healthcare settings.

“Thank you.”

  • Watercolour paintings to be sold for charity in memory of late Frome stalwart

Watercolour prints of local doors, painted by late Frome stalwart John Birkett-Smith, are being exhibited and sold in his memory, with proceeds going to Amyloidosis UK, the charity supporting research into the rare disease which he died from in July.

The exhibition at Rook Lane Chapel on 11th and 12th October, will showcase John’s paintings. He lived in Frome for over 35 years and was a prominent member of the community: he served as mayor from 1994 to 1995, was a Liberal Democrat town councillor, active in the local history society, led Frome Town Walks, was a trustee of the Cheese and Grain, and a passionate supporter of Frome Festival.

John lived with amyloidosis for over 10 years, a rare condition where a protein called amyloid builds up in your body.

  • Teen Frome swimmer sets sights on Swedish national team

A Frome swimmer is making waves internationally as he sets his sights on joining the Swedish national team and competing alongside some of the world’s best swimmers.

Hugo Jones, 18, who trains with Team Bath Academy Swimming, will fly to Sweden this weekend to compete in a major swim meet against top-level swimmers. Later this month, he will join a week-long training camp with the Swedish national and elite teams.

This follows Hugo’s first overseas competition in Stockholm earlier this year, where he competed against elite swimmers from across Europe. He is now aiming to represent Sweden at under-20/23 level and with an ultimate goal of gaining a place on the senior squad. Hugo’s mother is a Swedish citizen and he has dual nationality so that qualifies him to represent Sweden.

Hugo said, “Over the last few years my progress has been on an incline, with me competing at English and British championships and improving my times. This year I’ve been given the opportunity to train with the Swedish national and elite team, which is a fantastic opportunity. I’ll also be competing a lot more in Sweden.

  • Residents celebrate as Packsaddle Fields saved from development

The local community group People for Packsaddle are celebrating after a Planning Inspectorate refused plans for a housing development on the popular green space.

For several years, the group of residents have campaigned to save Packsaddle Community Fields, on Frome’s northern edge, from plans to build 74 houses and a children’s home on the site.

Somerset Council initially refused the planning application in January over concerns about development limits, landscape impact and loss of public open space. Developer LiveWest appealed, leading to a four-day planning inquiry in August, attended by community members, People for Packsaddle and local councillors.

People for Packsaddle raised £100,000 to pay for legal representation at the hearing. Fundraising included a special gig at the Cheese and Grain by Britpop icons Supergrass as part of the Frome Festival.

  • Four-year-old takes action on litter near Rodden Meadow

A four-year-old boy in Frome has collected 160 pieces of rubbish after being disappointed by the volume of litter along the footpath by Rodden Meadow.

Codie Van Vliet spent an hour and a half litter-picking last month with his grandparents on a 100-yard stretch of the footpath that runs alongside the meadow.

“He went out with his grabber and stick and collected 160 bottles and cans, which we then took home and sorted for recycling,” said Codie’s grandad, Quintyn Howard-Evans.

“Lots of people were walking past thanking him for doing it. Litter is a real problem around here and this is an example of someone trying to do something about it.”

  • Why making a Will could protect your loved ones – and support local healthcare

RUHX, the official NHS charity of the Royal United Hospitals Bath, is urging local people to make sure they have an up-to-date Will – and to consider leaving a gift that could make a lasting difference for future patients.

More than half of UK adults don’t have a Will, according to the Money and Pensions Service. Without one, it can be unclear what happens to your estate, your wishes may not be carried out, and loved ones could face unnecessary stress.

RUHX says that having a Will is the best way to protect your family’s future – and at the same time, it offers the chance to support causes close to your heart.

“The idea of writing a Will is a serious subject and one that requires much forward planning,” said Jonathan Chase, Gifts in Wills Manager at RUHX."

  • New musical ‘King of Fools’ set for the Merlin

A new musical comedy, sharing the story of unrequited love between a jester in Henry VIII’s household and a barmaid, is set to run at the Merlin Theatre starting on 29th October.

‘King of Fools’, written by Martin Dimery, is the latest production by the Kairos Theatre Company, under the direction of Anne Dimery.

The show is set in the court of Henry VIII. The story centres on Will Summers, Henry’s court jester, who discovers an entertaining barmaid, Jane, and transforms her into “Jane Fool,” Anne Boleyn’s personal jester.

Organisers say, “Jane becomes a great success but as Henry’s relationship with Anne begins to fail, Jane is drawn into Thomas Cromwell’s conspiracy to dispose of Anne Boleyn and so risks her own head on the block.

“Will and Jane existed in real life but little is known of them. ‘King of Fools’ is a fictional interpretation which sees the two of them locked in a battle of unrequited love.”

  • Learn all about ‘fashionable faith’ at church exhibition and catwalk

In celebration of the rich diversity of clothing and accessories in the Christian faith, St John’s Church is hosting a ‘Fashionable Faith’ exhibition and catwalk sharing the story of religious costume.

The event will run on Saturday 25th October at the church at 10am, featuring an exhibition of the clerical robes and outfits. There will also be a ticketed lecture at 2pm, when the catwalk will take place and the robes will be showcased with music and models.

Reverend Seamus Hargrave said, “Keeping up with today’s fast-paced trends can be a difficult task but fortunately there are some fashions which are timeless. Indeed, in the Church’s case, some might even call them antiquated.
