The Rotary Club of Frome organise a Young Photographer competition yearly for students of Frome College to enter and build upon their photographic skills and to showcase their work.
This year the theme of the competition was ‘Light up the Community’.
Over 100 students from all years entered three photographs based around the theme and a short description of their images. A short list of 25 students were then chosen by the Art Department to exhibit their photographs and words at an exhibition at Rook Lane chapel that took place on Tuesday 9th December. Judging took place earlier that day and plaques were presented to the three winners along with prizes relating to photography.
Winner Jess Oldham said, “These images of hands represent the work of ordinary people and their commitment. My images reflect more of an industrial environment with the paint resembling soot and hard manual labour creates connections between people all in the same position.”
Second runner up, Maddie Owen, said this about her work, “I wanted to capture peoples perspectives and the things we each see on a daily basis that mean a lot to us, despite how simple. My aim was to take that and create an interesting photograph out of it.”
Harry Foreman who came in third place said, “I wanted to explore the role of light in the natural community and how it changes ones perspective on such setting. I wanted to capture sunrise and how this time of day really gives nature such a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere. ”
Frome Rotary offer their congratulations to the winning students and also ‘Highly Commended’ – Sol Warsop and Jack Peters.
Rotary express their thanks to the judges, Ben Braine, editor of Digital Camera (chairman) Peter Lowry, Chris Bailey, a Frome photographer, and Sarah Auld. MC for the evening was Rotarian Dennis Barnard. Ben Brain also supplied goody bags for the winners.

![Town-wide programme brings month of social activities in May
A month-long programme of activities and events is set to take place across the town in May as part of an initiative encouraging residents to connect with themselves, each other and local places.
The scheme, Frome Connects, will run throughout the month and includes a mix of social activities, creative events and informal meet-ups in community spaces.
Highlights include the return of Dress Up Fridays, which began during lockdown and invites people to wear formal clothing or fancy dress and turn the town into their catwalk each Friday.
Set-piece moments include a Kate Bush-themed flashmob (Running Up That [Catherine] Hill) on 30th May, followed by a bell peal at St John’s Church where the bells will play Running Up That Hill.
There will also be a whole-town drone photo on Friday 30th May, with everyone encouraged to ‘look up’ at around 12.30pm.
