The Speed Enforcement Unit, Police, (SEU) and Community Speed Watch (CSW) are reminding motorists again of the dangers of speeding in the dark winter months around the busy roads in, and around Frome.
They report, “It is still fresh in our minds the deaths of three people including an unborn baby who died less than a year ago near Standerwick, an accident attributed to speeds at up to 134 mph. These deaths, along with others, make a total of five persons to have died on the roads around Frome in less than a calendar year.”
Ashley Reay from the Mendip CSW team has expressed his disappointment that, despite all efforts by the various authorities, high speeding still goes on within the Frome area, with some speeds almost double the speed limit.
He said, “At Warminster Road, Frome, the numbers recorded by the speed enforcement unit and subsequently prosecuted, are quickly approaching some 1,400 since February of this year and shows no sign of abating. Some offenders are now reaching the courts with fines of around £500 and 6 penalty points being issued.
“It is perhaps worth remembering that all of the speed checks in and around Frome are carried out as a result of the public contacting the police to ask for these checks and the days of simply throwing your warning letter in the bin that you receive from CSW should be gone, as there are sophisticated systems in place to check on a vehicle’s speeding history. If found to be a repeat offender, then SEU will be monitoring the speeds of these vehicles wherever they are in the local area.
“Can we then not ask the motorists to simply slow down and enjoy their Christmas, instead of opening a letter from the police to say that they are to be fined, have penalty points awarded or worse than that, an early visit to court in 2020 where the penalties will be severe?
“We surely owe those who have sadly died over the past year more than just a passing glance at a news headline.”
