ORGANISERS of Frome’s Great Big Green Week say the event was a great success as the community came together to celebrate the local green spaces and highlight the action Frome is taking to tackle climate change.
Over 30 events took place during the week, there was something for everyone and many thoroughly enjoyed taking part.
The organisers, Frome Town Council say, “What a whirl Great Big Green Week was, we learnt all about nurdles; the microplastics in our seas, and we explored sustainable options for plastic free period products. We stretched during yoga in Rodden Meadow, we dipped in awe at the wildlife in our ponds, we built bat boxes to offer new homes to our night flying residents.
“Over 75 people found repurposed style at the clothes swap, we rustled up some delicacies with Ready Steady Cook at the Community Fridge and learnt the importance of avoiding food waste and shopping for food locally. To top it off, over £4,000 was raised by Frome’s Community Bike Project at their bike jumble.
One person who attended the week of events said, “We love Great Big Green Week; I think it’s been really lovely and sends a fantastic message to the community that Frome Town Council cares a lot about the environment. My kids absolutely loved the BMX-ers in particular!!”
Another attendee added, “I just wanted to say a big thank you for a great bat box building session and bat walk. The people that ran the sessions were very knowledgeable and have really inspired my six-year-old. She has helped hang the box today ready for its new residents.”
Deputy mayor cllr Philip Campagna said, “Great Big Green Week provided an array of wonderful events; from highlighting our green spaces which we are lucky to have here in Frome, but also gave us food for thought and new ideas that we can take forward as individuals and as a wider community as we tackle climate change. If we all make small changes, it will make a big difference.”
