FROME’s new mayor, cllr Andy Jones, was voted in by councillors at Frome Town Council’s annual meeting on Wednesday 15th May.
Cllr Jones, who was the former deputy mayor, took over the mayoral chain from cllr Philip Campagna and he will hold the title for one year.
“I’m honoured to be Frome’s new mayor and I look forward to working alongside the brilliant people and organisations that make this amazing town such a very special place to live,” he explained.
“Thank you to my wife, Anne, in advance for supporting me as mayor’s consort, and a huge thank you to Philip Campagna for being such a great mayor. Phil has done wonders for the reputation of the town, the town’s bus service and so many other things. I’m not sure I’ll have quite such a high profile on social media, but do keep in touch and let me know how I, or the team at Frome Town Council, can help.”
This year there is no deputy mayor of Frome, but fellow councillors have agreed to support the mayor in his role if needed.
“Councillors are volunteers and give up their time freely and this year there’s no one person able to step in and take the deputy mayor role,” said cllr Jones. “I know that many of my councillor colleagues are happy to pick up duties if I’m away or if there’s too much to do, so thank you in advance for their support.”
Andy Jones was born in Stockport, Cheshire, and has been married to Anne for 46 years. They have a daughter, Laura, who lives in Germany with her family. Following a diverse career, taking in public libraries, retail, aircraft maintenance and supply chain management, Andy is now retired and moved to Frome in 2018.
He is involved with several local organisations, including Frome Festival, Frome Area Community Land Trust, SOS Frome, Cultivating Community, and the Frome Neighbourhood Network. He is also chair of governors at Critchill School. A keen amateur gardener, Andy volunteers at Broadway Community Gardens and helps to organise the annual Hidden Gardens of Frome event.
