WRITERS On Radio is a four-weekly show on Frome FM for everyone who loves reading, writing and all things literary.
Frome is a centre of excellence for all kinds of literature – as members of the 100-strong writers’ group known as Frome Writers’ Collective (FWC) know well. All around the town, and the surrounding area, writers return home from day jobs or family commitments to take up their pens, or sit in front of their computers.
Every year during the festival, like the mysterious tunnels that lie under the town centre, literary Frome emerges into the public eye with events like the Small Publishers’ Fair and the Frome Festival Short Story Competition, plus numerous opportunities to meet successful authors and hear them read their work.
Writers On Radio is there too, but not just for two weeks in July. For several years now, pandemic notwithstanding, it has been produced by a dedicated team, currently five in number, drawn from members of Frome Writers’ Collective.
“We used to go into the Frome FM studio with our guests to record interviews, articles and short stories,” said Sian Williams, “but now we have to work at home. We record articles on our phones and send them to our presenter, Lisa Kenwright, who puts the show together on her home computer and uploads it to the radio station. Interviews have been especially challenging, taking place in gardens or over the phone.”
The show covers all things writerly from broad topics, like poetry, fantasy, novels and drama, to the latest work by local authors, writing tips and word derivations. Interviewees can even choose a favourite piece of music.
The current show, broadcast on the 25th June, looks at editing and proof-reading and there’s an interview with successful local crime writer, Nikki Copleston, about the process by which FWC’s own imprint, Silver Crow, guides its authors to publication.
Programmes are also available as podcasts. Visit https://frome.fm/programmes/talk/writers-on-radio/ to hear them.
For listeners living in Frome the show goes out every fourth Friday (the next one is on 23rd July) on Frome FM (96.6fm).
