A toast to success – Frome wine merchants named among UK’s best

Frome-based independent wine merchants Givino have been recognised as one of the top independent wine retailers in the UK, earning a spot on Harpers’ Top 50 Independent Wine Merchants 2025.

This annual list celebrates retailers who excel in offering quality, authenticity, and innovation, placing Givino in the top 6% of independent wine shops nationwide.

Located at Commerce Park, Givino specialises in a carefully curated selection of wines and gins.

“This year marks an extraordinary milestone for our business,” said director Robbie Lymer. “For those in the wine trade, this recognition is akin to uncorking a bottle of your most cherished vintage—rich with meaning, years of dedication and a dash of celebration.”

The Harpers’ list honours independent wine merchants who go above and beyond in their craft.

“Being included in this prestigious list is not just an acknowledgement of our work but also a reflection of the vibrant, ever-evolving independent wine community we are proud to be part of,” he said.

Robbie and his fellow director Jamie are particularly passionate about Spanish, Portuguese, and English wines, which form a significant part of their collection.

“Every independent wine merchant has a story and ours is steeped in passion for discovery, education and creating connections,” says Robbie. “Our journey began with a simple but profound belief: that great wine should be accessible, enjoyable and a gateway to deeper cultural understanding. Over the years, we’ve sought out small producers, championed sustainable viticulture and curated selections that tell a story in every sip.

“Being recognised by Harpers affirms that our efforts to prioritise quality, authenticity and personal relationships with producers resonate with the community. It’s a testament to the value of staying true to your principles, even in an industry that constantly evolves with trends and challenges.

“To be named among such esteemed peers feels like a collective win for independent merchants everywhere. It highlights the unique role we play in championing wines that often fall outside the mainstream, creating spaces where people can explore and enjoy the craft of winemaking.

“For us, this recognition underscores the importance of our relationships—with our customers, winemakers, and local community. It’s a reminder that every tasting event, every thoughtful recommendation and every bottle sourced with care contributes to something greater.”

With this prestigious recognition under their belts, Robbie says they now plan to discover new producers and innovate how they connect with their customers.

“We plan to expand our educational offerings, host more immersive events and deepen our commitment to sustainability in every aspect of our business,” says Robbie.

“We’re also excited to shine a spotlight on the producers and regions we work with. Behind every bottle on our shelves is a story of dedication and artistry, and we’ll continue to share those stories with passion and pride.”

Givino also hosts regular wine-tasting events at their premises, which include the Snug, where visitors can enjoy a glass of wine, gin, or beer. They run a wine club, providing members with handpicked selections of wines, and plan to expand their offerings further.

“This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our loyal customers, dedicated team and the winemakers who trust us to represent their work,” says Robbie. “It’s your enthusiasm, feedback and shared love for wine that fuel our journey.

“Here’s to more exceptional wines, meaningful connections, and a bright future ahead. Cheers!”

  • Taxi tales from Frome inspires new play at the Merlin

A new stage play ‘RANK’ based on Frome actor’s experiences as a taxi driver in the town, will debut at the Merlin Theatre as part of its ‘Made in Frome’ 50th anniversary season

The play, based on a true story, is written and performed by Frome-based professional actor Dan Gaisford. It is a dark comedy thriller exploring themes of class, gentrification, assumption and taxi driving as the audience follows one driver’s epic encounter with a young woman and her two small children.

Battling to tell his tale against the backdrop of an ever-ringing phone, it is clear he has become more involved in the lives of his passengers than he ever intended.

Drawing on his own experiences working as a taxi driver in the town, Dan moved to Frome with his parents, brother, nan, uncle, auntie and cousin to reopen the historic Griffin pub in the 80s and, after a brief decade away, returned to the call of home.

  • Badminton club marks 10th anniversary

A badminton club in Frome has celebrated 10 years of hosting friendly and competitive games for local players.

Shuttles Badminton Club was founded in October 2015 and quickly grew to 30 members within six months, making full use of all four courts during Monday evening sessions.

The club aims to provide a social, welcoming environment dedicated to fun, fitness and friendly competition for players aged 18 and over. While not for absolute beginners, it people who have not played for some time and want to play again.

Club coordinator John Warman said, “The club has naturally had some changes in membership over the ten years, although some of the founding members still play regularly.”

Shuttles meets from 7.30pm to 9pm on Monday nights at Frome Leisure Centre on Princess Anne Road. Although there are currently no vacancies, those interested can contact John Warman on 07989 243897 to join the waiting list.

  • Travel company launches 2026 brochure with exciting range of trips

Frome’s own Lesmon Travel has unveiled its 2026 brochure, promising a wide variety of trips across the UK and Southern Ireland.

The family-run company, started over 40 years ago by Les and Mon Price, is now run by their daughter Brigitte, who is continuing her parents’ tradition of personal, friendly service.

Brigitte says the 2026 programme has been designed with relaxation in mind. “All but one of the tours are UK based, with as little travel time as possible from the hotel, so passengers can spend more time enjoying their holiday,” she explains.

Among the highlights are return visits to Bletchley Park, following last year’s sold-out tour, and a new five-night trip to the Isle of Man, added after several requests from customers. The brochure also includes a longer tour to Southern Ireland, which requires only photo ID rather than a passport, making it an accessible option for all.

  • Community hospital volunteers retire after 18 years

Two long-standing volunteers at Frome Community Hospital have retired after 18 years of service.

Diana and Rachael joined the old Frome Victoria Hospital in 2007 and have been doing the hot drinks round ever since. They both said one of the highlights of their role was serving tea to the Countess of Wessex in 2008, when the newly built Frome Community Hospital opened.

“That was probably our main highlight,” said Diana. “We have also loved the role, doing something for the community and seeing familiar faces at the hospital.”

  • Library welcomes back daily newspapers thanks to Friends group

The Friends of Frome Library have brought daily newspapers back to the library, after they were cut last year due to Somerset Council budget savings.

The papers have been secured in the library until early 2026, following a fundraiser held by the Friends, which raised £326.92. Some of the funds came from an avid library user, aged five, who sold ice lollies in her neighbour’s garden during the Hidden Gardens trail in the summer.

A member of the Friends, Kerry Meech, said, “With isolation and loneliness increasing, the newspapers provided an important, yet sadly overlooked and underestimated, focal point for social interactions, particularly for older visitors to the library, who would pop in every day to gather and discuss the news.”

  • Local drama group launches historical radio play

A local drama group, Dramakarma, has launched its first radio play in collaboration with FromeFM.

Titled The Last Matron, this original production brings to life the rich, often untold history of Keyford Asylum, a once-pivotal institution in the heart of Frome.

Written by Kevin Ross in association with Dramakarma and Keyford History Group, the play is inspired by real events, personal diaries and historical records spanning over a century.

First performed on stage in 2023 to wide acclaim, The Last Matron will now reach a broader audience through the radio adaptation.

Set against the backdrop of a crumbling institution facing demolition, the story is woven with vivid characters: a defiant young girl desperate to escape institutional life, elderly residents clashing and reminiscing, and brave evacuee children confronting the chaos of World War II.

  • New Henry VIII comedy premieres in Frome

Frome’s thriving amateur theatre scene is set to welcome a brand-new comedy this October, as Kairos Theatre Company premieres King of Fools at the Merlin Theatre.

Following the success of their 2023 tour of The Haunting of Richard the Third, Kairos is teaming up once again with writer Martin Dimery. This time, he has collaborated with Helen Turner, former keyboard player for Paul Weller and the Style Council, to bring audiences a humorous take on the Tudor court.

“The Haunting of Richard the Third was an intense, tragic piece, so I resolved that my next play would be a comedy,” said Martin. “Following last year’s hugely popular Kairos adaptation of Blackadder, and the success of Wolf Hall on TV, a comedy satire set in the time of Henry VIII seemed ideal, but we wanted to present the Henry and Anne Boleyn story from a new perspective. It was then I came across the story of two jesters at Henry’s court, Will Sommers and Jane Fool.
