When my late husband, John, and I were raising our two sons, we encouraged them to be independent, listen to others but form their own opinions, and stand on their own two feet. To be caring, considerate, work hard and to do right by their friends.
As they grew to marry and have children, those values became even more important. Every decision they make, they make with their wives and children in mind, so they can all grow together, creating resilience within the family. I’m pleased to say I’m very proud of my two sons, to see them living those values every day.
I believe the same principles apply to being a good councillor. A good councillor listens to others and does what he/she thinks is right by their ‘family’, which, for us, is the residents of Frome, who elect us to represent them.
We won’t always agree with one another and, of course, people won’t always agree with what we decide, but as long as we act with integrity, transparency and with the voices of residents in our minds, we’re doing right by them.
As we say thank you and goodbye to longstanding town councillor Mel Usher, we say hello to a new member of the town council in Lyndsey Mayhew – welcome to the team, Lyndsey!
As a councillor and particularly as mayor, Frome feels to me like my extended family. And it’s a pleasure to meet so many of you when I’m out and about, including turning my hand to being a moving part in a ‘human fruit machine’ for We Hear You recently!
It makes my heart sing when I hear of great things going on, but equally, it breaks my heart to know there are also those who are in need physically, financially, mentally and emotionally. It’s hard when people are suffering, but that’s why I’m so heartened to know that there are so many offers of help coming from all directions.
It’s not just these important groups who do such great work; we can all help too, by sitting and listening, hearing their stories, offering a helping hand.
Holding on to those family values is what makes us resilient. It’s being caring and supportive that keeps us moving forward, helping us to manage change and come through the other side a little stronger.
The world can be a scary place these days, often displaying hatred, corruption and greed, but a town like ours should be proud to stand tall, knowing that the principles and family values we choose to live by are what keeps us so strong.
So, in summary, I’m immensely proud to be your councillor, and I’m particularly proud to be your mayor. I love working with my council colleagues and I value and appreciate the opportunity I’ve been given to work within and for my ‘family’!
