More than 150 drivers were caught speeding in Frome in a single day during a coordinated operation by Avon and Somerset Traffic Police and neighbourhood policing teams, aimed at cracking down on dangerous driving and illegal road users.
The offences were detected on 14th November, during National Road Safety Week, which ran from 11th to 15th November.
As part of the operation, 150 drivers were reported for exceeding speed limits, with some caught driving at over 60mph in a 30mph zone.
“Other offences were also detected, including drug driving, excess alcohol, and no insurance, resulting in a number of vehicles being seized and some drivers being remanded into police custody,” explained Mendip Community Speedwatch coordinator, Ashley Reay.
One of the most significant incidents occurred in Frome when a 25-year-old man, suspected of being intoxicated, was followed by an unmarked police car into a car park just off the A361. Avon and Somerset Police reported that the driver was arrested at the scene while two passengers fled on foot but were later arrested.
The driver tested positive on a drug wipe and was identified as a disqualified driver who was also wanted for multiple offences, including seven outstanding theft charges, eight breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order, and one assault offence. He was remanded into custody.
“This is a truly frightening number of offences,” said Ashley. “With so many recent deaths on the A361 Frome bypass, it is alarming to see that some motorists pay little attention to their speed, ensuring their vehicle is insured, or adhering to other basic laws.”
“The police will simply not give up on these issues, as it is not as some think ‘a fundraising venture’ but a concerted effort to make the motorist aware that if you do not drive within the confines of the law, then the police sooner or later will apprehend you, or in the worst-case scenario you will have an incident, or worse.”
The police are set to install a new set of AI cameras along the Frome bypass that, in addition to detecting speeding offences, are capable of identifying other road traffic offences, including failure to wear a seatbelt and using a handheld device while driving.
Ashley said, “The well-publicised safety cameras will soon be installed on the Frome bypass, working 24/7. This, along with new technology in speed enforcement, will mean even more checks will be made. Drive and enjoy your vehicle by all means, but please do it safely and within the law.
“Every one of us has a loved one waiting for us to return. Please make sure you get home safely. Those who have tragically lost their lives on the roads around Frome don’t have another chance in life.”
