Frome-On-Sea, Frome’s one-day urban beach will return on Sunday 4th August, complete with real golden sand, deckchairs, and donkeys.
The Frome Independent’s urban beach has become a popular feature of the August edition of the monthly market, which pops up beside Frome Library and the Market Yard car park on the first Sunday in August each year.
Each year, the team behind The Frome Independent transform the area outside Frome Library with golden sand, buckets and spades and traditional deckchairs, bringing a little taste of the seaside to the centre of Frome. Market-goers can take a break from browsing the work of designer-makers, food producers and flea traders, to relax in a deckchair with an ice cream or a pint of local cider and feel the sand between their toes.
Frome-On-Sea started as a way of celebrating the summer on what was always a quieter month for The Frome Independent. It has now become one of the most popular events in the market’s calendar, in particular with local residents who can enjoy all the trappings of a day at the seaside without having to leave town.
The Frome Independent’s director, Tabitha Clayson said, “We often hear our fellow Frome residents say that all that’s missing from Frome is the sea, so back in 2014 we thought we’d try and make that a reality by recreating some of the British seaside here in Frome. It’s great to see it continue as such a popular feature at our August market.”
Frome-On-Sea is an event that’s free for all visitors to enjoy. As with all the market’s special events, it’s funded through The Frome Independent’s unique membership club, the Market Makers. Market fans can buy a year’s membership for £15, giving them access to exclusive offers and discounts from market traders and participating Frome shops. Membership can be bought at The Frome Independent stall on market days or online at www.thefromeindependent.org.uk/rewards/
As well as the pop-up beach, the August edition of The Frome Independent will welcome family activities from Frome Toy Library and Wiltshire Scrapstore, as well as live music and DJing throughout the day. Elsewhere in the market there will be the usual array of craftspeople, designers, makers, vintage traders and food producers.
Frome-On-Sea at The Frome Independent takes place on Sunday 4th August from 10am – 3pm. The Frome Independent is a not-for-profit social enterprise run by a small team of local residents. Markets take place on the first Sunday of the month across Frome town centre and are free for all to attend.
