AN amateur Frome runner will take on the challenge of a lifetime next year – running 100km in two days.
Katie Jones will take part in the ‘Race to the Castle’ ultra marathon in June next year, which will take her on a route through the Northumberland countryside, finishing at Bamburgh Castle. To help keep motivated whilst training, Katie has set herself a fundraising target of £500 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association – the national charity that offers support and information to people with MND, their families and carers.
Katie has previously completed one marathon in Athens, Greece, in 2017. But this will be the first ultra marathon attempted by Katie, who first started running in 2015 when she took part in a ‘couch to 5k’ challenge.
“I have decided, as we head into winter,” explains Katie, “that I needed a goal, so I thought I’d tackle an ultra, and then further to the thought, I decided to run the ultra straight through. I am slightly nervous, but having a fundraiser alongside my training is keeping my thoughts in check and helping me start to frame a winter training programme, including several local trail running events to test equipment, legs etc.”
