Assisted travel options in Frome

Frome is host to several services designed to help residents without transport to access medical or dental appointments.

Frome Town Council’s Assisted Travel webpage maintains information about some of the options.

Cllr Philip Campagna said, “We’re fortunate to have good public transport options for a small town, thanks in part to Peter Travis, Tracey Harding and the fantastic FAVBUG team’s campaign to retain and improve local bus services. And we’re luckier than many Somerset towns in having a train station. However, for older people, or those with additional needs, and with our nearest general hospital in Bath, it can be really challenging to get to things like hospital appointments without a car.

“Luckily, there are options for you – for most you’ll need to register in advance so it’s worth planning ahead. All phone numbers and links for individual services are on the Frome Town Council’s website, link at the bottom of this article.”

Frome Community Drivers

Volunteer community drivers will collect from any home address in BA11, take you to where you need to go, wait for up to an hour (or come back to collect you if you need longer) and take you back home. You can use volunteer drivers for:

  • GP, dentist or hospital appointments.
  • to visit someone else in hospital or at a care home.
  • therapy group or social group meetings.
  • depending on driver availability, you can also book for supermarket trips.

A contribution of a £5 booking fee + 80p per mile is requested to cover drivers’ expenses. There is a 50% discount if you have a bus pass.

Book Frome Community Drivers by calling 07596 591391.

Mendip Community Transport (MCT)

This service provides transport for senior citizens, those with disabilities and socially excluded persons (for instance those with no access to local bus routes). It includes the Slinky Bus and Hospital Car Service (see below). You must register in advance for MCT services; if you cannot do this online, they can provide a paper form.

MCT services are first come, first served, so passengers are advised to give as much notice as possible; they can book up to 14 days in advance (15 days for medical appointment).

Slinky Bus

Slinky is a door-to-door, demand-responsive transport service funded by Somerset Council and operated by Mendip Community Transport. It is for anyone not served by or unable to access public transport services. All vehicles are accessible. Once you are registered, you can book the Slinky Bus by calling 01749 880482 during office hours.

Slinky bus services visit Frome on Journeys up to three miles cost £2.50 single or £4 return. Journeys of three miles and over are £3.50 single and £5 return. There is a 50% reduction for bus pass holders and children aged 5 to 16. Under-fives travel free.

Hospital car service

Mendip Community Transport operates a Hospital Car Service. It provides transport to outpatient departments at hospitals and other medical appointments for patients who are unable to use conventional public transport, staffed by volunteer drivers. The service is only available where the distance to the hospital is more than 12 miles.

There is a charge for this service based on the overall mileage, plus an administration fee of £2.50.

Additional costs may be incurred if your appointment is longer than two hours, or you need to amend your booking. Once you are registered, you can book the Hospital Car Service by calling 01749 880613 during office hours.

The Patient Transport Advice Centre

Eligibility criteria apply. People registered with Somerset GP practices can enquire about transport to appointments. Call 01278 727444 from 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, or email transport@somerset.nhs.uk.

Find out more about the services above and other useful information, including railcards and bus passes, how to get a Blue Badge, accessible country walks and more on the Frome Town Council’s Assisted Travel page at https://bit.ly/ftc-assisted-travel.

If you need help accessing the page, call Frome Town Council on 01373 465757 or visit the town hall reception during office hours, Monday to Friday.

  • Frome’s own variety night is back

Frome’s own variety night is back next month at the Merlin Theatre, showcasing a line-up of stellar new acts.

New Old Friends’ show ‘Pick & Mix’ will return on Friday 24th April, following the runaway success of their most recent show, ‘Crimes Against Christmas.’

Hosted by Feargus Woods Dunlop, the show will feature stand-up comedian Joe Riley and Frome’s own dance company, Tri-Art.

Continuing Pick & Mix’s burgeoning reputation for unique and interesting musical headliners is the alter-ego of ‘Crimes Against Christmas’ star Andrew McGillan. The musician known as ‘Heybus’ will bring folky guitar-based storytelling, which harkens back to a simpler time of bards, ballads and affordable housing.

  • Frome youth centre unveils new community facilities

A community centre for young people in Frome showcased its state-of-the-art renovation at a recent launch event.

Frome Youth Community Centre, part of the local charity YMCA Brunel Group, held an official launch on Saturday 14th March, welcoming Frome Mayor Anita Collier, young people and other community members to view the upgrades.

The renovation has transformed the centre on Vallis Road, following an £800,000 grant from the Youth Investment Fund.

The new facilities include a state-of-the-art computer room with a commercial vinyl printer, a fully equipped kitchen and other modern amenities. There is also a new roof, showers, changing rooms and new flooring.

Director of Youth and Community at YMCA Brunel Group, Mark Willcox, said, “These upgrades will not only provide a more welcoming and engaging environment for young people but also improve the overall safety and accessibility of the Frome Youth Community Centre.”

  • Award-winning poet to perform at Rook Lane Chapel

An award-winning spoken word poet will perform at Rook Lane Chapel in May.

Pete the Temp is bringing his acclaimed show ‘Romantics, Mystics and Revolutionaries’ to Frome on Friday 1st May.

“The show fuses music, comedy and ecstatic poetry with a live performance-lecture on two poet-revolutionaries – William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge,” say the organisers. “Together they unfold a spellbinding history of riot, state repression and psychedelic experimentation — one that still speaks to our age of upheaval.

“Hear the story of two Bristol-based poets / revolutionaries who helped change the face of history. William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge have been brought back to life in this rapturous collision of ecstatic poetry and classical instruments. Learn about the Romantic poets’ relationship to psychedelics, anti-slavery and rebellion in this intriguing journey of lyricism and laughter. This is a one-of-a-kind act of enchantment and madness from a time of slavery and war."

  • Wildlife favourite Michaela Strachan set for Frome show

Marking 40 years in the public eye, wildlife TV star Michaela Strachan is bringing her brand-new theatre show to Frome Memorial Theatre next month.

From The Wide Awake Club to The Really Wild Show and Springwatch, Michaela’s new theatre show laughs at the chaos of TV, celebrates the beauty of nature and reflects on what it means to grow up – and grow older – on screen.

The show will be at Frome Memorial Theatre on Tuesday 21st April at 7.30pm.

Organisers say, “It’s a high-energy, funny and heart-warming journey through four decades of conservation and re-invention. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be upstaged by an elephant, wrangle the likes of Chris Packham, or ice skate on national TV looking like Julie Andrews, then this show is for you. Not Just a Wild Life promises an evening of inspiration, nostalgia and genuine connection – for nature nerds, nostalgia lovers and anyone who’s ever wondered how a rubber chicken can change the course of your life."

  • Celebrated local artist’s collection to feature in Dore & Rees Spring auction

The collection of a local Frome artist and collector will be offered for sale at the Dore & Rees Spring Interiors Auction next month.

The auction of Lucy Miranda Sipe’s possessions will take place at the firm’s Frome saleroom on Wednesday 15th April, and includes mid-century furniture, tribal jewellery, spiritual objects and a little bit of witchcraft!

“Lucy Miranda Sipe (1957-2025) was a local artist, botanist and collector,” said Guy Tayler, Head of Interiors at Dore & Rees. “She was creative in almost every field – an illustrator, knitter, jewellery maker, needlewoman, writer and gardener.

“The first thing you saw on entering her home was an eight-foot-high tree made from rope and wood hung with vintage glass decorations. On closer inspection and on reading her accompanying annotated notebook it transpired that she had hand-painted each decoration and detailed every design choice along with the prices and provenance of each figure, and its significance in Eastern European folklore. It’s a completely extraordinary work of art."

  • Acoustic tribute to Joni Mitchell at Cheese and Grain

An intimate acoustic tribute to the music of Joni Mitchell is coming to Frome on 17th April.

The show, ‘This Flight Tonight – the Songs of Joni Mitchell’, will be presented by a five-piece band.

Organisers say, “Established in early 2023, acclaimed songwriters Zervas and Pepper present the show, featuring songs such as ‘California’, ‘Blue’, ‘Woodstock’ ‘Both Sides Now’, ‘Carey’, ‘Coyote’, ‘A Case Of You’, and many more.

“Joni Mitchell is one of the most influential artists of the modern age, rising to stardom in the late 1960s; her music and songwriting is the jewel in the crown of the Woodstock generation. Bursting onto the scene with a sound entirely her own, Joni earned the respect of her musical peers and the love of her audiences worldwide."

  • Frome Drama Club to stage first 80th anniversary show

A local drama group is set to celebrate its 80th anniversary with an upcoming play in April.

Frome Drama will perform Jack Absolute Flies Again from 16th to 18th April at the Merlin Theatre. The performance will be the first of three plays marking the group’s 80th anniversary.

Organisers say, “Written by Richard Bean (One Man, Two Guvnors) and Oliver Chris, this is a completely hilarious farce set in 1940 at RAF Fontwell during the Battle of Britain. The play is very loosely based on Sheridan’s The Rivals, and features many of the same characters, notably the world-famous Mrs Malaprop, whose mangled verbiage spawned the phrase malapropism. But this version is faster, ruder, funnier and altogether very different from the original.”

The show is recommended for ages 14+. Organisers say, “Come along and support local people in local theatre and keep theatre alive.”
