Somerset Masters Badminton team travelled to Clevedon on Sunday 31st March to play their final game of the season against Avon.
The team consisted of two men’s pairs and two women’s pairs, and after eight games the counties were evenly matched, with four wins and four losses each. Players then swapped to play mixed pairs, and Somerset pulled ahead, finishing the match with an 8/4 victory.
Local resident Alex Lawrence-Berkeley, who plays at Phoenix BC in Trowbridge, and at Frome Badminton Club, made his county debut at the match. “It was pretty tense during the first two thirds of the meeting, with wins and losses keeping the balance between the counties – but we managed to finish the job and win by a good margin in the end. As with so many sports, the final scoreline doesn’t represent how close it was for most of the time.
“Avon’s team has a lot of depth, especially given they can draw on the huge number of players in the Bristol area. Historically, they’ve always given Somerset a challenge, so it’s a great away win for us.”
The competitive badminton season, which runs between September and April, is now drawing to a close but local clubs, including Frome BC (which plays at the leisure centre on Wednesdays from 8pm), are always on the look out for new players, either for casual or competitive play.
