FROME Town Band has held its first ever summer school over two days.
“It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to try the different brass and percussion instruments,” said a spokesperson for the group. “We had novices and some beginners and intermediate players from the band took part. The event was led by Chris, our musical director, and supported by two of our main band players, June and Kirstie.
“Over the two days we learnt how to play five different pieces on different instruments, to put a concert on for family: Bicycle Built for Two, Double Symphony Surprise, We Will Rock You, which the solo was played by a novice on the cornet.
“To break up the day, we practised rhythms, we watched a piece performed by the Cory Band, had to eat ice creams to cool us down, played ping pong and had a music quiz, which the girls team won by a whisker.
“We even signed up two new recruits to join our beginners’ band and we are looking forward to seeing them again in a couple of weeks’ time.
“The next two days saw the main band working hard rehearsing, playing along with The Snowman which will be shown/performed at the Merlin for our Christmas concert. It is exciting, challenging and an amazing opportunity to do this for our community.
“If there are any brass players that would like to be a part of this, please contact frometownband@gmail.com.”
