2014 has been an exciting year for the team at the brewery.
“We have employed a new team in the sales office and seen our sales expand into the South East,” explained company director Cathy Lyall.
“With the expansion of sales we are planning to install shiny new brewery equipment in 2015. We are installing a bigger Mash Tun, where the malted barley from local Warminster Maltings is turned into the sugars that are used later in the process for the yeast to turn into alcohol!
“We are also getting a larger Copper; this is where the boiling takes place and the hops that give our beer their delicious unique flavours are added!
“The roof will be taken off and the Copper craned into place. This expansion will mean we can brew an extra 1,300 pints in each brew. Anybody who walks past the brewery on brewing day will smell the wonderful aroma of hops and malt and see steam rising from our chimneys.
“We have also created some new brews this year: Fifteen, a 4.8% Blonde to celebrate our 15th Birthday and Great Uncle John’s Prohibition Ale, in honour of Rik Lyall’s brewing ancestry.
“Rik had a Great Uncle John who had a small brewery in Canada during prohibition in America and used to run beer over the border. It is a 4.6% Red, American style beer.
“In the run up to Christmas we will be brewing our Christmas favourites – Winter Spice a porter with a hint of cinnamon and the ever popular Bobbled. There will be lots of festive events happening at the brewery tap, The Griffin, so come and sample Frome’s finest beer!”
Rik Lyall founded Milk Street Brewery in 1999. Previously he worked as Head Brewer and developed beers for Cotleigh, Stonehenge and Hopback before branching out on his own. Rik started brewing beer aged 14 and it has been a lifelong passion.
He prides himself on the highest quality beers. “I do like to experiment but for me its all about balancing delicate flavors to produce easy drinking beers,” he said.
