FROME Recycling Centre was temporarily closed last month when a grenade was brought in for disposal.
A bomb disposal team was called to the centre on Wednesday 28th August, who established that it was a ‘non-working’ grenade.
Following on from the incident, Somerset Waste Partnership, who manage the centre, has urged residents to check their website for a list of materials that cannot be recycled at the centre, including explosives and ammunition.
They say, “Do not take ammunition or explosives to recycling centres. Take all care when dealing with such items. If you have any ammunition or explosives for disposal, phone the police on 101 or 999 if you have any concerns, and to get advice. If you find what could be unexploded ordnance, phone 999 immediately.
“We urge anyone with any concerns about an item or materials they wish to take to a recycling site to check the website www.somersetwaste.gov.uk and call the recycling site on 01373 453622; or contact Somerset Waste Partnership if they are still unclear: www.somerset waste.gov.uk/contact-us/.”
