THREE local women are going above and beyond to raise money for local cancer counselling charity, We Hear You (WHY) by embarking on a 30km trek to some of Iceland’s most stunning and hostile landscapes.
Lucy Kitchener, CEO of WHY, Ruth Knagg, fundraising manager (grants and philanthropy) for WHY, and Carys Dunstan, healthcare assistant at the RUH, want to raise £10,000 for the Frome-based charity before they set off in March – and they have already raised £6,500.
Carys said, “We are raising money for local charity WHY who provide counselling and support for families affected by a cancer diagnosis. It is a charity close to all our hearts as personally we have all been affected by cancer in our families and amongst close friends.
Vital support
“During tough financial times it’s so important that we support WHY in its efforts to provide such vital support to local families.
“We have currently raised £6,500 and our goal is £10,000 by the time we take off for Reykjavík. We arranged a series of events including a curry and ceilidh back in October, cake sales and jumble sales locally to raise funds and we have another jumble sale coming up on Saturday 4th February at the Masonic Hall in Frome.
Snowy, icy and steep!
“Trekking will be challenging as conditions can be snowy, icy and steep. We have all been training on the South West Coast Path in Cornwall, Cheddar Gorge and generally working on our overall fitness for the last year ahead of the challenge.
“We’ll be flying into Reykjavík and hopefully viewing the Northern Lights, trekking across mountain passes and around volcanic lakes and terrain. We’ll also visit a Geothermal valley and the famous Blue Lagoon before flying back home from Reykjavík.
“We would be grateful if you could support us at our upcoming jumble sale or by making a donation at TotalGiving.”
