IT’S been a busy time for Frome College students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Communications officer for Frome College, Jane Davis said, “This is a bumper year for Frome College students. We have just had our 80th award approved since September 2017. This includes 62 Bronze, 10 Silver and 8 Gold awards. More should be completed before the end of the academic year. Well done to all our successful young people!
“Since October, Frome College students have been carrying out conservation work in a number of locations around Somerset. They have planted daffodils above the new playground on the Frome Show field, planted a hedge, cleared brambles, dealt with moles, repaired walls, laid hedges in the Mendip Hills, and cleared a conservation area at Hayesdown School. Thirty-five people so far have completed their volunteering section of their awards by completing between 15 and 30 hours each of service. Well done to all who have taken part!
“Through the winter months, our Silver and Gold students have been busy planning expeditions for the summer. The expedition season has now started, and our first expeditions start at the end of April.
“Bronze students will be completing training and practice expeditions in May in the local area, and then into the Quantock Hills.
“For the Silver award there are too many students this year to fit into one expedition. The group has been split into two. The first four groups will complete their practice expeditions from 27-29 April on Exmoor. The second four groups will go out at the end of June for their practice. Their qualifying expeditions will take place in September.
“For the Gold award this year, we are going to Snowdonia to complete our Gold expeditions.
“We are looking forward to another successful season!
