ANOTHER Frome business has closed doors with, immediate effect, due to the cost-of-living crisis with owners saying the industry is an ‘unsustainable loop’ with constant price hikes.
Burrito Boi, a popular Mexican takeaway and restaurant at Station Approach, closed after launching in the Covid-19 lockdown.
In a statement on the business’s Facebook page, it said, “There are so many factors as to why we are in this position right now and to put a definitive reason on it is too difficult. For some transparency, however, the industry (from our opinion) is in an unsustainable loop, prices are constantly going up and up and we just simply can’t keep up with it anymore.
“The margins are wafer thin and although on the outside we looked (and were) crazy busy and it looked as if we were making loads of money, the truth is, the money is tight so support these small businesses while you can – even if it costs a bit more. Things are tough for all right now, but every time one of these little businesses go, we lose another dash of colour from the canvas. It’s imperative we buy and support local, where we can, of course.”
In 2021, the company won the Best Covid start-up business in Somerset and Dorset in the Muddy Stilettos Awards.
“What we would love to say though, on a more positive note, is that this has been a truly life changing experience for all of us involved, we have learned so much about ourselves in this last three years and have made ourselves more-proud than we ever thought we would have,” read the Facebook post. “To make something that has had such an impact on so many peoples’ lives, through our food and the soul we put into it, is incredible.
“From starting in our little kitchen on our little cobbled street to gambling that we were going to be able to quadruple our turnover overnight to make the restaurant work, to, at one point, having 14 members of staff, our own cocktail bar, a booming events business, a venture into the lovely city of Bath and most importantly friends made, wives found and generally incredible memories created – we can walk away with our heads held high.
“One last time, we would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for supporting us throughout this journey. Our incredible friends and families who have helped in the masses. You are amazing and we are eternally grateful.”
Burrito Boi follows other popular businesses that have been forced to close in Frome due to the cost-of-living crisis including Lo Rapitenc, the Spanish Deli and tapas bar that was based on Cheap and Street and Penleigh Farm Traditional Butchers that was on Stony Street.
