The members of the Lions Club of Frome launched their programme of winter events with a four day book sale in the Westway Precinct which raised a total of £422.
The Lions take this opportunity to thank all those who donated/bought books at this event and the landlords of the precinct for allowing the use of the shop.
This was followed by the 2nd quiz of the season in which 18 teams participated, answering questions on 10 different subjects, one of which was geography. Not many of the quizzers could name the country off the coast of which could be found the Hen and Chicken Islands.
The winning team with a score of 85 of a possible 110 was made up of Richard Phillips, Chris Bailey-Green, Mike Bailey and Freda Green. Terry Carter, Judy Annan, Jim Phippen and Janet Wain were runners-up with 81 points. Mike Thomas, Sue Chinnock and Yvonne and Malcolm Maunder correctly identified 20 of the 30 images in the picture quiz.
The event raised £250. The answer to the difficult question was New Zealand. Thanks on this occasion go to all the quizzers, those who donated raffle prizes and Pete Lippiate and staff.
The next quiz takes place on Friday 9th January 2015 at 7.30pm at Frome Rugby Club.
On Thursday 27th November, the Lions’ Tree of Remembrance was placed outside Rook Lane Chapel and was dedicated at a short service conducted by the Reverend Colin Horn. Music for carol singing was led by Frome Town Youth Band, followed by mulled wine and mince pies.
The Tree provides the opportunity for members of the public to remember a loved one or cause for a donation of a minimum of £5 to the Lions’ Charity Fund. A registration form and further details are obtainable from Lion Keith McLeod on keith. mcleod @fromelions.org. uk or tel: 01373 454318.
Once again Nugent, Vallis & Brierly have consented to the placement of the Tree and meeting the cost of the electricity and Longleat Forestry have donated the tree, for which the Lions express many thanks.
The Lions will be joined by their friends in Frome Rotary Club to accompany Father Christmas on his annual tour of Frome and surrounding villages starting on Fri. 5th December.
