Sat 26th Aug. FA Cup First Qualifying Round. Falmouth 2 Frome Town 6.
FROME Town secured their place in the hat for the FA Cup’s First Qualifying Round after a win against Falmouth Town.
After a frustrating first week of the season, the Robins went down to Cornwall wanting to build a good start to a cup run. Falmouth started brightly but the solid defensive trio of George Rigg, Warren Maidment and Sam Teale restricted the home side’s attack to a few half chances.
Just after the 20th minute mark, Frome’s dominance started to pay off when skipper Teale passed to the impressive Reece Rusher who cut through the defence and fired past the goalkeeper to give the visitors the lead.
Moments after a crucial tackle from Rigg denied Falmouth an equaliser, Griffith launched onto a through-ball by Humphries, the striker finishing calmly to take a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time.
After the break Frome continued where they left off when Rusher’s pass found James Ollis who shot past the goalkeeper for a third. Rusher’s through-ball then found Griffith who scored his second with ease.
Falmouth grabbed one back before Griffith rounded off his first hat trick in Frome colours and restored a four-goal lead. Rusher skilfully went past the defender before curling it past the keeper to make it six. The Ambers grabbed a late consolation, but Town held on for an impressive 6-2 win and the travelling fans can come back from Bickland Park with plenty of positives.
Frome have been drawn at home against Clevedon Town FC of the Western League in the next round of the cup, which is set to be played on Saturday 2nd September at Badger’s Hill.
