THE long trip to 3rd placed Cambridge City resulted in a 2-0 defeat for Frome Town, though a strong performance from the visitors could well have resulted in a share of the points, with only a last minute goal putting the game beyond them.
After Cambridge had survived a penalty appeal in the first minute as Ben Thomson was bundled over, Darren Chitty saved with his legs to deny Adam Marriott, but was powerless to prevent Danny Kelly from giving the hosts the lead in the 13th minute as he surged through and shot low into the corner.
Frome went close in the 28th as Thomson’s close control took him past three players to set up Kris Miller, but his chipped shot from the edge of the box beat Zac Barrett but thumped against the home cross bar.
Chitty saved with his feet to again deny Marriott and on the stroke of half time, a flick on from Matt Groves almost allowed Brandon Mundy in on goal after a mix up in the home defence. In the 53rd minute, a superb cross field ball from James Brighton set the dangerous Marriott free again, but with time and space, he sliced his volley wide of the post, then Frome went close as a combination of play from Wood, Thomson and Ford allowed Miller a shooting opportunity that was well blocked.
A Jack Vallis header went agonisingly wide a minute later and then Marriott again found himself in acres of space but failed to get a shot on target, and as the home crowd held their breath as the match approached the final whistle, Marriott sealed the match in the third minute of injury time as he was put clean through and lobbed Chitty with the ball bouncing into the unguarded net.
Mark Cooper was awarded the “H&B Tyres Man of the Man Award” for a another strong performance at left back.
