Frome Carnival Committee are preparing for their annual Fun Day, which will take place in Victoria Park on Saturday June 3rd between noon and 5pm. The fun-day is an important event in the carnival diary – allowing the committee to raise money to put on September’s carnival.
It takes thousands of pounds to put on the yearly carnival and the committee work throughout the year to pay for it. That means that the money kindly donated during the processions can be transferred to Frome Carnival Charity – who put the money back into the local community. The charity helps individuals, other charities, good causes and community groups.
In 2016, a phenomenal £14,081.74 was given out in grants and disbursements. The charity helped, for example, people carpet their homes, buy new white goods, gave a whopping £5,000 to Fair Frome to buy a new van and supported Critchell School. As Carnival committee member, Emily Denne explains, “This really is Frome’s Carnival and Frome’s charity. Money given on Carnival night is given back to the community and makes a profound difference.”
This year’s fun day promises to be bigger and better than before and will feature children’s activities, rides, stalls, face-painting, games, barbecue and cakes. The fun day also has a family-friendly dog show and every dog owner is urged to come along and take part – there are a range of classes including; junior handler, best puppy, waggiest tail and best rescue. Classes cost just £2.50 or you can enter five classes for £10.
The carnival baby competition will take place at 2pm during the fun day – with two age ranges: 0-9 months and 9-18 months. The winning baby from each category will become the much celebrated ‘Carnival babies’, taking part in September’s afternoon procession! Entry is just £1 per baby and anyone wishing to take part should arrive at the fun day by 1pm at the latest to register.
Please come along to the fun day, have a fabulous day and remember: Your town, Your carnival and Your charity!
