Frome Carnival committee has announced that carnival royalty roles are returning for this year’s festivities.
In 2017, the committee axed the carnival royalty, replacing them with ‘carnival ambassador’ roles, which were open to anyone in the community to apply for.
However, following feedback from the public, carnival prince or princess roles for children aged 7 to 12 will be up for grabs at next month’s Carnival Fun Day. The carnival ambassador role will remain, with a junior role for anyone aged 13 to 17, and a senior role for anyone over the age of 18.
Speaking to Frome Times, Mandy Morgan from the carnival committee said, “There was a mixed reaction to the ambassador role when it was launched. It was meant to make the role more diverse, open to anyone of any gender. However we were told that the title was not appealing to youngsters. So we have taken on board the feedback and decided to do both.
“Royalty roles are available for a younger category – there will be no ‘beauty pageant’ element to the selection process. They will be asked the same questions as the ambassadors and will only be judged on their answers, not how they look.
“We’ve already had good feedback – especially about how the royalty role is now open to boys.”
Also this year, Frome Carnival is looking for a carnival gran or granddad to represent the event. Applicants for all the available roles must live within 5 miles of Frome. They will be judged on personality and their ability to represent Frome Carnival at fundraising and publicity events throughout the year.
Selection for all the roles will take place at the Carnival Fun Day on Saturday 1st June at Victoria Park. Hopefuls are asked to register their interest by 1.30pm on the day, with judging taking place between 2-4pm.
