FROME’S popular free to attend Multicultural Festival is back at the Cheese and Grain next week.
According to the event organisers, Frome is now home to 58 nationalities, and the festival will be an opportunity to celebrate all corners of the town’s community.
The festival takes place on Sunday 10th of October, 11am-2pm, and it will feature music, food and performances from over 20 countries.
Performances will include traditional klezmer music, English Morris dancing and a chance to learn some Latin salsa moves and rap.
Some of the food delicacies on offer will include Tibetan dumplings (momos), Eritrean stews (Ades, Alcha, Tsebhi), authentic Jamaican lemonade, and lots of delicious savoury snacks and cakes from Frome’s international community.
Activities will include Japanese calligraphy, Thai Kratongs to float on water, Tibetan sound healing, Spanish memories and Polish folk art.
Frome Library will be there with a multicultural book corner, Somerset Diverse communities will be doing a live podcast from the event and Sari (Stand Against Racism & Inequality) will be giving out information about how best to deal with hate crime.
Organisers Azeema Caffoor and Lenka Grimes from Young People Frome say, “There has been a great response, with local people from various nationalities eager to showcase aspects of their cultures. The Festival is also an opportunity to meet people from your own country, make new friends, and learn new things about how people do things differently in other countries.
“As part of the festival this year, Frome’s Anti-Racism Communities group ‘Arc’ will be also celebrating Black History month with an exhibition showcasing some of the many talented and important figures in history. Local schools will also be making contributions as well as performing in the line-up.”
Organisers Azeema and Lenka also told Frome Times that they are delighted with the help provided by Frome Town Council and the Community Council for Somerset, and they want to say a big thank you to all the participating performers and stall holders.
There will be some social distancing measures in place and they will be erecting a marquee to extend and use some outdoor space.
