FROME’S Big Christmas Get Together event, which will be unable to go ahead this year due to the pandemic, will still reach out to lonely people in partnership with other charities in the town.
Organisers of the Big Christmas Get Together say, “We all know that Christmas can be a hard time for some people both young and old, for a whole host of reasons, and this year it will be especially difficult for many people. The Big Christmas Get Together has been hosting a traditional Christmas lunch on the 25th for about 120 guests from our community for over nine years.
“Working with the help of many amazing local businesses and a passionate group of volunteers we have been able to support anyone in our town who would like a nice meal and some company. Our Christmas Day lunch is usually a real celebration, an opportunity for both participants and volunteers to be part of a very lively and special day.
“With much sadness, we can’t run our event in person this year but the need for us to reach out to those in our community who are isolated has never been so important, so we are going to be doing things a little differently. Working with Active and In Touch and Fair Frome, we want to deliver hampers to those on their own on Christmas Day.
“We would love some help;
• Planning – this year will be very different in how we normally do it and we need an amazing organising team to pull this off.
• Donations – we would like to do about 120 hampers with a Christmas dinner, pudding, gift, and crackers in it. If you would like to work with us to provide any of those things or have any ideas or recommendations of who may like to be involved, we are all ears.
• Volunteers – we will need about 20 volunteers to help pack up hampers on Christmas Eve, and a venue to safely do it in. On Christmas Day we need about 120 volunteers to deliver hampers to participants and if it is allowed, to stop for a while and provide some company. It would great if you are DBS checked.
• Recommendations – if you are a community organisation and you know someone who would like company and a lunch on Christmas Day, please get in touch.”
