Charity rugby match shines light on motor neurone disease

A special rugby tournament was held at Frome Rugby Club recently to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease (MND).

The ‘No Talk Touch’ rugby tournament saw players forbidden from speaking during games, reflecting communication challenges experienced by people living with MND.

The event was held in support of club member Dom Jones, who is undertaking a 26 for 26 challenge for MND charities after his mum Nicola was diagnosed with the illness last year.

More than 20 junior and senior teams took part in the day-long festival of rugby. During periods of each match, teams were forced to rely on instinct, teamwork and non-verbal communication.

Club member Matt Warnock said, “Players, coaches, families and supporters turned out in force, creating a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day and demonstrating the strength of the rugby community in supporting worthwhile causes.”

A spokesperson for Frome RFC said, “It was a privilege to welcome so many people to the club in support of Dom’s incredible challenge. The No Talk Touch format brought something completely different to the game while highlighting the importance of communication in a way that resonated with everyone involved. Most importantly, the day showed what rugby does best – bringing communities together to support an important cause.”
