Around this time of year thoughts bend towards Christmas…what to buy for a loved one, where to be on Christmas Day, who will be with us and what to cook?
To mark the beginning of the festive season we had everyone coming together for the switch on of lights in the Market Place and the singing of carols.
This year there was also the added build up as we watched, with nail-biting anticipation, the development and upgrade of the Boyles Cross and to cap that, a child of Frome illustrated the Royal Mail first-class stamp for Christmas. Now, all over town the shops are bursting with interesting presents and sparkling with decorations. It really is a bumper package of goodies this year!
This year, as for several years now, on Christmas Day I’ll be helping out with the Big Christmas Get-together. What a brilliant event that is! When it started, I helped with the cooking. Volunteers met to prepare veg and heat up the huge amount of gravy needed! We used the kitchen of the United Reform Church on Whittox Lane, now the Hub Nub. It was nerve-wracking, exciting and hilarious to cook there and then wrap everything up to keep warm and be ferried down to the Cheese and Grain. Now-a-days it is a calmer affair as everything takes place at the Football Club but the messages are still the same. A great crowd of volunteers work together to help make a wonderful event so that no one needs to be alone on Christmas Day.
It is also the time of year to do a little planning or dreaming. What will you add to your present list or what do you long for in the New Year? Traditionally we have three wishes. What would you love to do, what goal will you set yourself?
Hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
Cllr Sheila Gore,
Mayor of Frome.
