Christmas on a budget: top ten tips revealed for people in Frome

FROME’S Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre is offering free debt help and tips on how to enjoy Christmas, even on a tight budget.

CAP debt centre manager, Phil Gray, based at Holy Trinity Church, said, “We know that most people want to have a nice Christmas, but it can seem hard to do when money is limited and everything seems to cost so much.

“Following these very simple tips can, hopefully, take some of the pressure off and stop people in Frome having to worry about out-of-control bills after the Christmas period is over.

“Christmas is supposed to be a time for celebration, but we know that for many people in our area things can be tough, with not much money to go around. We think that with a bit of planning and organisation, as well as a little creativity, people can still make the festive season very special for them and their families.”

Try these top ten tips from CAP to help you have a happy Xmas on a budget:

1. Make a Christmas budget. Create a budget based on what you can afford, and stick to it. Write out everything you need and work out exactly how much it will cost. See if there’s anything you feel you can do without this year to save some cash.

2. Don’t be ashamed to talk about your finances. If you’re worried family or friends may buy you a more expensive gift and you feel like you’ll have to return the favour, be open with them about what you can afford. We all face different circumstances and challenges in life so there’s no shame at all in not being able to afford the same as someone else. Maybe suggest you both set a limit of £10 or whatever you can afford to ensure you stick within your Christmas budget.

3. Only buy Christmas presents for close family and friends. People love to be generous at this time of year, but maybe those gifts for the kids of your old neighbours from six years ago aren’t crucial. Prioritise gifts for those closest to you first. If your whole family or friendship group is trying to do Christmas on a budget, try a Secret Santa with a small maximum amount. It means you only have to buy one person a gift and it can be great fun for everyone.

4. Avoid using credit or borrowing if you can. Christmas often brings a temptation to just go wild and worry about the consequences later, but that is likely to leave you in financial difficulty at the start of 2022. A great approach is to only buy what you can afford to buy, according to your budget. If you really have to make use of credit or buy-now-pay-later deals, always check the interest rates and terms and conditions first to make sure you fully understand what you’ll have to pay back in the long run.

5. Make a food shopping list and only buy what you need. When you’re doing your food shop, make a list, check it twice and stick to it. We all know wandering aimlessly, picking up what we fancy, results in a much bigger bill at the checkout. Try different, cheaper brands for some of your festive grub. You may not be able to tell the difference. It’s also good to plan your meals in the run up to Christmas to make sure nothing goes to waste.

6. Reuse things from last Christmas. New things are nice, but not always necessary. Items like Christmas jumpers and decorations can be costly these days so make sure you get plenty of use out of your old ones. Alternatively, see if any of your family or friends have any Christmas stuff you can borrow.

7. Consider asking for gifts that you really need. It’s not wrong to want a little treat for Christmas, but asking for a gift that you need and planned to buy anyway will save you money.

8. Start saving for next Christmas now. To help relieve some of that horrible financial pressure this time next year, start putting something away for a rainy (or snowy) day now. Maybe just start putting away £1 or £2 a week for Christmas next year. Even if that doesn’t cover everything it’s much better than relying on just one payday to cover the whole of the festive period. This could help cover a few presents or maybe your Christmas dinner.

9. Keep an eye on the energy you’re using. We know energy prices are on the rise so if you have Christmas lights, try not to keep them on all day. Wrapping up warm with an extra jumper, turning the thermostat down slightly, and avoiding the use of fan heaters that use a lot of energy will help save you money as well.

10. Seek free debt help if you’re already struggling. If you’re already in debt and worried the cost of Christmas will only make things worse, seek free, non judgemental debt help from Christians Against Poverty (CAP) or another free debt help service. Get in contact with CAP today on 0800 328 0006 or visit capuk.org.

Phil adds, “This year has been challenging enough so we want to encourage people to follow these tips, and others they may see elsewhere, so that they can have a great Christmas, a more positive end to 2021, and not be worrying about the cost into 2022.”

  • Frome flea market and craft fair back this weekend

The popular Frome Flea Market & Craft Fair returns this weekend for its sixth year.

Situated at West Woodlands Showground just outside Frome, the event was established in 2021 by Peter and Claire Townsend and is held six times a year on the second Sunday of each month from April to October (excluding September) with the first event of 2026 this Sunday, 12th April.

Regularly welcoming over 250 stalls, the event continues to grow in size and popularity and also boasts a classic/supercar display and live music. This weekend will see the return of the resident due ‘The Sitting Tenants’ and also local singer Kelly Dale.

“There’s a lively mix of stalls both inside and out offering everything from antiques, vintage and retro items to handmade crafts, art and local produce,” said Claire. “There’s a great atmosphere and it’s much more than just a Flea Market & Craft Fair.

“There’s a great display of classic and supercars – all of which gain free entry to the event an

  • Frome stalwarts honoured with Civic Awards

Local volunteers and organisations have been awarded with Mayor’s Civic Awards for their service to the town.

The awards were presented by Mayor Anita Collier at the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday 1st April at Frome Town Hall.

The award recipients were The Pod Charity, family support charity Purple Elephant, Director of the Merlin Theatre Claudia Pepler, Jane Norris from the Royal British Legion, Ted Prendergast from Safe Space Frome, and Marilyn Burrows from the Widows and Widowers Group.

Before the awards were presented, Cllr Anita Collier gave a presentation sharing highlights from her year as mayor. She said, “I absolutely love what I do. It’s something that makes me very emotional just to think about it, to be honest. I have always been a very strong ambassador for Frome. It’s a fabulous honour and it has been an enormous pleasure for me to see and do so much in this incredible town. We are so lucky here with all the kindness that people show in every respect and all the wonderful work that people do.”

  • Leisure centre operator goes into administration

The charity running Frome Leisure Centre has gone into administration, with Somerset Council looking to appoint a new operator in the next three months.

Fusion Lifestyle went into administration on 1st April. Professional services company S&W Partners LLP (S&W) was appointed as administrator, and will run Fusion on a temporary basis for three months.

Frome MP Anna Sabine, who has been campaigning over ‘persistent issues’ at Frome Leisure Centre, has launched a petition to show support for the facility.

She said, “I am sorry to hear that Fusion has fallen into administration, leaving Frome’s leisure centre facing yet more uncertainty. For years, residents have endured broken boilers, unusable changing rooms, closed courts, gym issues and cancelled sessions, all while still paying memberships. I’ve repeatedly raised these failures with Fusion and Somerset Council.

“I’m relieved that Somerset Council have stepped in to secure the leisure centre until the summer, but long-term planning is crucial to securing the use of these facilities for our town. I hope other provisions will be found quickly.”

  • Archie’s double clinches title!

Monday 6th April
Southern League Premier South Division
Frome Town 3-2 Shaftesbury

Frome Town have been crowned Southern League Premier South Champions after goals from David Duru and two from Archie Ferris clinched a dramatic 3-2 win against Shaftesbury on Easter Monday.

Talisman Duru broke the deadlock inside four minutes with his audacious kick over Ben Taylor’s head between the sticks.

However, the visitors responded in rapid time, with Jack Hoey netting the equaliser just five minutes after; his effort was fired into the top left corner after a throw-in was poorly cleared.

The Rockies, in fact, took the lead just shortly into the second half; after Harris Feltham’s foul inside the box, Santos sent Kyle Phillips the wrong way.

However, it was Frome’s leading goal-scorer who stole the show with Ferris’ brace with just three minutes between each of them, sending Badgers Hill into raptures.

  • Frome Town are champions!

Frome Town sealed the Southern League Division One title on Easter Monday, beating Shaftesbury 3–2 at a packed Badgers Hill in front of 1,096 jubilant fans.

The Robins twice came from behind to clinch a win that caps a remarkable season – from fears last summer that the club might fold, to a record-breaking run that sees them crowned champions with 101 points and three games still to play.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said Manager Danny Greaves. “It’s been on the cards for a while in everyone else’s eyes but in my eyes it was never done until it was mathematically done.

“To do it in the way we’ve have today sums up our season really. Heart, resilience. We went 2-1 down and to come back and win it in the way we did shows what we’re about.

  • Co-working space opens in Westway Precinct

A new co-working space has opened in the Westway Shopping Centre.

Westway Workspace has been created by Frome resident Diana Miller, who set out to restore a place where freelancers, remote workers and small businesses can work together in the heart of town.

The project has turned what was once an empty and neglected space into a light-filled loft with private studios, coworking desks, meeting rooms and communal areas, all designed to support the town’s growing community of independent professionals.

Diana said, “We wanted to create somewhere where kind and mindful people could come together to work; a space that feels calm, creative and welcoming.”

  • Baby support charity seeks trustees

A Frome charity supporting families through pregnancy, baby loss and early parenthood is looking for new trustees to join its board.

Frome Birth Talk is seeking new trustees to help guide its future. The board say they are particularly keen to hear from people with experience in midwifery, health visiting roles, or fundraising.

Anyone who has lived experience of being a young parent or being from a marginalised ethnic background is also encouraged to apply.

Operations manager Lucy Hill said, “For many parents, the perinatal period – pregnancy and the first two years after birth – can be a time of vulnerability as well as joy. Frome Birth Talk has become a vital part of the community by providing accessible, timely support for those experiencing perinatal mental health difficulties across Frome and the surrounding areas.”

  • Frome Festival short story competition welcoming submissions

There is still time for Frome’s budding writers to enter the annual Frome Festival Short Story Competition.

The closing date is 31st May, following a bumper year last year. Stories between 1,000 and 2,200 words may be submitted by post to Frome Library, or online via the website.

Entry is open to all and attracts submissions from across the UK and beyond. However, there are special prizes for those living within 25 miles of Frome.

Each year, organisers invite a guest judge. This year’s judge is Costa Award-winning novelist Claire Fuller, who will pick the 2026 winners and award the prizes in July. Claire will also be in Frome to talk about her latest novel, Hunger and Thirst, at a Frome Writers’ Collective event on 18th June.

  • Schoolchildren raise funds for cancer charity

Children in Frome raised £600 for a local cancer counselling charity recently when they wore pink, purple and blue clothes to school.

Vallis First School raised the funds on Friday 20th March, when the children wore colourful clothes to support We Hear You (WHY).

Pupils from Rode and Norton St Philip First Schools, which share an executive headteacher with Vallis School, also took part, raising an additional £407.

The funds raised will go towards WHY’s urgent appeal to raise £55,000 by 31st March or risk closure. The charity offers counselling services to family, friends and carers of those with cancer.
