‘A BEGINNER’S Guide to the Oil & Gas Industries;’ the second of a series of talks by environmental researcher, Nikki Jones, on climate change. its causes and impacts, will be held at Frome Town Hall on Thursday 19th October at 7.00pm. Admission free.

The talk is hosted by Frome Town Council, supported by East Mendip Green Party and Sustainable Frome.

  • Residents voice safety concerns over 40mph limit on Melksham East relief road. Residents have shared major safety concerns over the opening of the long-awaited Melksham East relief road at a 40mph speed limit. The relief road, an extension of Eastern Way, was due to open once the roundabout, which took two years to complete, was finished in the summer. Residents have expressed frustration over the delay in opening the road and, earlier this year, launched a petition calling for the speed limit to be set at 30mph to protect pedestrians and children living nearby.   • Melksham recovers from the ‘worst flooding’ since 1968. Severe flooding in Melksham, caused by Storm Bert, has been described as the most significant to hit the town since 1968, damaging local shops, businesses and homes. Prolonged heavy rainfall flooded many parts of the town on Monday 25th November, breaking the banks of the River Avon and sending water across Bath Road, flooding homes and businesses, including those at Avonside, as well as flooding the former Avon factory site. Cars were backed up and abandoned across town and the surrounding villages, leading to the closure of Bradford Road and New Broughton Road in the town centre. Read more on our website.   • Traditional pantomime performance for older residents in Melksham. Older residents are invited to enjoy a traditional pantomime at the Riverside Centre on Tuesday 10th December, organised by Celebrating Age Wiltshire. The performance, presented by the touring duo Tor Theatre, promises to deliver all the magic of pantomime, with comedy, music, song, dance, and plenty of audience participation. “Comedy, music, song, dance and audience participation all combine to provide an amazing, fun experience,” say the organisers.   • Holt Players’ latest show features new faces. The next performance by the award-winning Holt Players will be Pack of Lies by Hugh Whitemore, a true story of international spies, lies, betrayal, and an ordinary middle-class family who got caught up in the middle. The production, running from Thursday 28th November to Saturday 30th November at Holt Village Hall, features two newcomers to the Players: teenager Poppy Foot from Bradford on Avon and Kirstin West from Melksham. Kirstin, Holt Players’ newest member, gamely stepped into the breach last month when her part unexpectedly became vacant. “We were delighted to welcome Kirstin to our talented cast a few weeks ago,” said director Simon Welch. “I have waited many years to have the chance to direct this play.   • Plans for disused telephone boxes revisited. Plans for two decommissioned red telephone boxes in Melksham are being revisited by the town council, as they have remained unused despite several proposals since their adoption in 2020. The council adopted the boxes—one on Spa Road and the other on Littlejohn Avenue near the Pig and Whistle pub—from BT in 2020.   • Melksham Times Past. Trees, parks and roads for the Silver Jubilee A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis Prior to King George V, British monarchs only celebrated jubilees after 50 years on the throne. In 1935, his Majesty was the first to celebrate a Silver Jubilee, marking his 25 years as monarch. Following with tradition of past jubilees, King George V commissioned trees to be planted in his honour, thus providing work to hundreds of people at a time when there was high unemployment and economic difficulties in Britain. The next Melksham Monday Movies will feature two hit films: My Old Lady, starring Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith, and A Boy Called Christmas, also starring the late Maggie Smith. My Old Lady tells the story of a down-and-out New Yorker named Mathias (Kevin Kline), who travels to Paris to liquidate a huge, valuable apartment he has inherited from his estranged father.   • Christmas wreaths and new member search for Townswomen’s Guild. Members of the Melksham Townswomen’s Guild got into the festive spirit this month by making Christmas wreaths, as they aim to recruit new members. The group’s chairman, Tricia Hoy, said, “One member was a bit concerned about managing tricky greenery onto a hoop, but no! Linda McCloud had prepared many strips of colourful material to knot around a wooden hoop, so no sore fingers – just beautiful finished wreaths ready to decorate our homes next month!” Tricia also highlighted that, due to low membership numbers, the group faces the possibility of closure. “We need to recruit new members to keep our group going,” she explained. “We meet on the second Friday of each month at 2pm and are a very friendly group.   • Local band to play event for emerging new talent. Local indie band The Sunnies will take part in a band night showcasing young musical talent, aiming to raise awareness of the struggles local bands face in securing gigs. The Sunnies will perform at the Young Bands Night, set to take place in Frome and organised by Frome-based band Butane Skies.
