FROME College will be hosting a parliamentary candidate debate with journalist and TV presenter Mariella Frostrup at the Merlin Theatre this Friday, to encourage young people to vote in the upcoming election.
The debate will run from 3.30-5pm on Friday 13th March, and will be open for Post-16 students and their parents to find out about voting in this year’s elections.
Frome College spokesperson Jane Davis said, “56% of 18-25 year olds did not vote in the last election, and we’d like to change that.
“With David Heath MP stepping down and our having Post-16 students at the college who are eligible to vote, it would be good for the students to hear what the all the party candidates have to say prior to the election.”
Mariella Frostrup, who will be hosting the debate, is an established journalist and broadcaster who has written for The Guardian, Observer, New Statesman, and is an art critic who has stood on the judging panels for the Man Booker Prize and Baileys’ Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Following the resignation of David Heath MP, there will be five party candidates vying for his place as the Member of Parliament for Somerton and Frome:- David Rendel (Lib Dem), David Warburton (Conservative), David Oakenson (Labour), Theo Simon (Green), and Alan Dimmick (UKIP).
