Mathematics is flourishing at Frome College, and there is a huge success culture within the mathematics team.
Paul Durber, assistant principal & head of maths said, “The proportion of students gaining good grades has increased year on year during the past few years, and the team now secure grades above the national average for mathematics.
“For the past two years, Frome College has entered students for the academically challenging Further Maths GCSE. The students who were entered volunteered to study for the qualification in their own time in after-school classes, but still managed to achieve results that were well above the national average.
“This year, two students, Matthew Haines and Morgan Curle, achieved the “A* distinction” grade, putting them in the top 1% of maths students in the whole country! Oshi Francomb and Dylan Oliver also achieved A*s .
“Frome College has built strong links with the maths departments of the middle schools, and a joint Gifted & Able project sees 15 year 8 students from Selwood Academy and Oakfield Academy, visiting the college every Monday to take part in exciting mathematics investigations, designed to stretch and challenge them. The project has been developed in conjunction with renowned mathematician, Simon Singh.
“In sixth form mathematics, A-level maths is the most popular A-level course, and many Frome students have said that they chose to stay at Frome College, after building their choices around studying A-level maths because there is such a high proportion of students achieving top grades every year. Students also have the opportunity to study A-level further mathematics, and there is an outstanding track record of results in this subject over many years.
“Students who are studying the World of Work and BTEC courses, also have the opportunity to improve on their GCSE mathematics grade.”
