PEOPLE and businesses in Frome have been sharing surplus food for two months now, thanks to Community Fridge: Frome.
Edventure: Frome, with support from Frome Town Council, launched the UK’s first community fridge in April earlier this year.
The fridge, stationed at the colourful Loop de Loop block, near Frome library, will be open every day to enable residents and businesses to share surplus food and for anyone to help themselves to quality food that would otherwise be wasted.
The project is linked with local food businesses to encourage them to share good quality leftovers, rather than throwing them away.
Esther Deeks, project co-ordinator said, “The project is going really well and much of the feedback we are getting is really positive.
“We regularly get thank you notes in the visitors’ book at the fridge space and are beginning to have more and more donations. The most recent statistics from the visitors’ book show that we have intercepted 1,500 food items from the bin and allowed the people of Frome access to good quality surplus food, in just over two months.
“We have had very, very little waste or issues and it seems to be running so effectively. It stays very clean and empty most of the time with food often being donated and then taken within the hour, so now all we need is more food waste aware businesses who are able to donate.”
