A new growing season has officially begun at Broadway Community Garden in Frome following a £20,000 National Lottery grant.
Local residents, volunteers and families gathered on Sunday 29th March to mark the start of spring and celebrate the new major funding award.
The grant will support the next phase of the garden’s development, helping it expand its role as a shared green space for the town.
The gathering saw volunteers come together to prepare beds, plant early crops and welcome new faces.
Alongside this, the garden is launching a new membership offer, giving more people in Frome a way to support the project even if they’re not able to volunteer regularly. Members will help sustain the garden’s growth and upkeep, ensuring it remains a shared space for the whole community.
A regular volunteer at the garden, Caroline Corke, said, “We’re overjoyed to receive this grant as it means we can grow the garden together with people across Frome. Our vision is a space that’s open to both people and wildlife – somewhere to grow food, enjoy the sunshine and reconnect with nature. With spring in the air, that feels more possible than ever.”
The funding will be used to purchase tools, compost and soil, as well as to build new structures that will allow volunteers to work in the garden throughout the year.
Broadway Community Garden offers twice weekly drop-in sessions and is open to anyone, no experience needed. The garden is also inviting local businesses to take part in volunteer days, offering teams the chance to spend time outdoors while contributing to a growing community initiative.
