A woodland in memory of a much-loved Frome resident, who died two years ago, could soon be created as a place where friends, family, and the community can go to remember her in peace and tranquillity.
Moko Sellers died aged 39 from cancer and was a popular resident of the town who had her own vegan business.
Before she died, she sought solace in nature and would go for sunrise walks through the woodlands near Frome and Cley Hill. To keep her memory and love of nature alive, Moko’s friends and family launched a fundraising campaign in 2022 to raise funds to create the woodland where she could be remembered.
The initial fundraising target for the woodland was £10,000; however, due to the generous support of the Frome community, the target was surpassed in 24 hours, and now, two years on, the campaign has raised nearly £25,000.
“We are still so grateful for all the donations, with many from people who knew Moko over the years and others who were touched by her story,” explained James Hamilton, one of Moko’s friends who is working on the project.
Having now surpassed the target means the extra funds can be used for further opportunities in the woodland. James said, “It is now hoped that with the funds that have been raised, we will be able to (in conjunction with Frome Town Council) create a new public space for Frome, which consists of woodland and meadow.”
Moko was a mother to Lemmy and a sister to Kali and Michi, and it is hoped that work can commence next year, with the space being open to everyone by the end of next year.
“The fundraiser is still open, and the more funds we raise, the more we can plant to create a lasting legacy for Moko,” said James.
