Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex recently presented Dr Nicola Grove, founder of the Frome-based charity, Openstorytellers, with a Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) honorary fellowship.
Nicola, who trained as a speech and language therapist and is also a honorary senior lecturer at the University of Kent, was recognised for how she has pioneered the use of narrative and story in her work in disability education.
The Countess, who is the patron of RCSLT, presented Nicola with her award at a ceremony held on 25th September at Council House, Nottingham.
The RCSLT honorary fellowships are awarded annually to individuals who have provided outstanding service to the profession and people with speech, language, communication and/or swallowing needs.
The RCSLT was particularly impressed with how Nicola has inspired generations of speech and language therapy students and qualified practitioners with her original and creative approaches to communication, as well as empowering children and adults with complex communication needs.
“Nicola has pioneered the use of literature, poetry and story in special schools, and was one of the earliest practitioners of multisensory storytelling,” said the RCSLT.
