SPEED enforcement will be returning to Frome this week to try and get an ‘epidemic of speed’ under control.
A crackdown on speeding will start after warnings to slow down have gone unheaded.
“Those who care to read the media or watch TV will have noticed the growing concern over high speeds seen on the roads of the UK since the Coronavirus started,” said Ashley Reay, leader of Mendip Community Speedwatch.
“With the police taking a sensible attitude to excess speed then it was hoped that the public would respond with sensible driving.
“Unfortunately, this has not been the case as speeds have increased to quite ridiculous levels and locally, the Frome area has been no exception, so much so that as the whole of the UK is about to see a dramatic crackdown on speeding.
“Speed enforcement will return to the Frome and district area for a sustained period of time from this week in an effort to get this ‘epidemic of speed’ under control.
“A previous report in the Frome Times was hoped to have had a calming effect. It seems that the warning has been ignored so the consequences are now speeding enforcement for the foreseeable future.
“No doubt’ we shall have the same old crocodile tears about persecuting the motorists, Money making and the like but the facts shown by electronic speed monitoring, that very many vehicles checked are seen to travelling at speeds up to 70 mph in a 30 mph limit and up to 48 mph in a 20 mph zone’.
“It is not going to be allowed nor should it be.
“Simplistically put, those that drive at these speeds are in for a very big shock in the coming weeks. Don’t want the penalty points or fine or a visit to court? Then slow down.”
