FROME Leisure Centre will not reopen this weekend because ‘building issues’ continue to delay the refurbishment, which has now seen the centre closed for over six months.
The revamped Frome Sport & Fitness centre on Princess Anne Road remains closed while the upgrade – part of a £2million investment from new operator Fusion Lifestyle – has taken more than twice as long as expected.
The official opening was scheduled for this Saturday, 7th May, under the assumption the centre would already have opened to members in April.
Frome Times was told that construction problems mean the schedule had to be scrapped and a new date could not be confirmed. A spokesperson said a ‘late spring’ opening was still the target.
General manager at the centre Sarah Cruwys said, “We understand how disappointing and frustrating the delays to the centre are, and we share that disappointment wholeheartedly.
“We want to open the Frome centre as soon as possible but our priority has always been, and will remain, customer care and safety, and ensuring the centre is the best it can be for the community.”
Renovation work began in October last year and was expected to take around three months, but asbestos and a problem with the pool equipment delayed progress.
The re-developed sports centre will offer an improved and modernised gym, a soft play area, new indoor studios, changing facilities and an improved pool area. The centre will also offer indoor and outdoor facilities for team sports.
Sarah continued, “The Frome centre is an enormous project, with an investment of over £2million to completely redevelop the centre from top to bottom and because of this, there have been some unforeseen building issues that means the work is taking longer than anticipated.
“We are working closely with our contractors to keep up-to-date on progress and will update our members and the community as soon as possible.”
