DENTAL workers in Frome are gearing up to throw themselves out of a plane cruising at 10,000ft all in the name of Dentaid – a charity that provides dental care and oral health advice for people experiencing homelessness, survivors of abuse, families in poverty, people recovering from addiction and communities where people struggle to access dental care.
Six dental workers from Grants House Dentistry in Frome will be leaping out of an airplane in September and they are hoping to raise £2,400 for the charity. The staff say that any donations would be welcomed as Dentaid provides vital support for some of the more vulnerable people of society.
One of the jumpers, Tiffany Dyke, explained, “Dentaid supports people who don’t have access to regular dental care which includes, but not limited to, abuse survivors, cancer patients in hospitals, and the homeless. Dental health is so important and it’s gratifying knowing we are raising money for a cause close to all our hearts! Every penny that is donated is helpful to the charity, so we are grateful for any donations before our jump date!”
The jumpers are Charlotte Brophy (practice manager), Rowan Glossop (dentist) and dental nurses Lin Pearce, Domi Mieszczak, Anna Hicks and Tiffany Dyke. Tiffany says her and her colleagues were inspired to do the skydive after Rowan at the practise convinced them following a recent skydive of her own.
“Rowan actually gave us all such a glowing review it convinced us to go ahead and sign up to do it for charity,” Tiffany explained. “A few of us are excited to do the skydive but there’s a lot of nerves too! Some of us have wondered about doing it but never had the opportunity to just go for it and raising money for a worthwhile cause is the perfect excuse!”
Each jumper will be strapped to a qualified skydiver who will assist with the jump – there will be 30 seconds of complete free fall before the parachutes open, and then a five-minute drift down to solid ground.
