A CHILDREN’S story hour featuring a drag queen in Frome Library proved a big hit last week – despite protestors outside.
Drag Queen Story Hour, which is touring nationwide, and was a sell-out in Frome, says its aim is to ‘show the world that being different is not a bad thing’.
Aida H Dee, The Storytime Drag Queen, read stories to local children and parents who had to face protestors saying the events ‘sexualise children’ and ‘ensure that transgender propaganda is forced down children’s throats’.
Rival protestors with rainbow flags also gathered to show their support for the event.
One parent said, “I went to this event today with my two young children and it was great. It was a celebration of storytelling and creativity, and the whole audience loved it. The protest outside was a reminder of why cultural events promoting inclusivity and difference have to exist.
“I’d thoroughly recommend going to another session if it’s programmed again, and applaud the library in continuing to promote diversity and inclusivity in the community.”
Another said, “I took my 2-year-old along and we had the most fabulous time! We all sang ‘If you’re happy and you know it’ as we left to drown out the ridiculous protesters shouting at us. Love wins.”
Protestor, Mark Nelson said, “Having done a fair amount of research into this subject, our group from Cornwall have travelled to more than a dozen of these events in libraries across the South West. From the outside this may look like an innocent initiative to encourage very young children to read, but we feel there’s much more to drag queen story hour UK.
“Hopefully you saw enough to understand we are merely concerned parents and grandparents.
“At every library location we have attended we’ve been met with aggressive counter-protests by masked thugs who call themselves “Antifa”, a far left contingent and self-confessed communists. In reality, many of these are indoctrinated kids always accompanied by handlers who encourage unruly behaviour. I’m quite sad to say two of the worst locations for this have been Falmouth, Cornwall and Frome, Somerset.”
