TWO Frome women will be running in a 50-mile race next month to raise money for charity.
Kate Wareham and Fiona Norris, both members of Frome Running Club, will be taking part in the Westcountry Ultra Flat 50 in May, in which they hope to run 50 miles in 11 hours.
The keen runners are raising sponsorship money for Sarcoma UK, in aid of a friend, and for the Lions Club of Frome.
Kate said, “In 2016 we did the 33-mile Imber Ultramarathon, which is the furthest we have ever run, then Fiona came up with the idea of running this 50-mile race from Taunton to Minehead, via Bridgwater.
“We think it’s a good idea to raise money this time as it’s a huge challenge and we aren’t sure if we will do something like this again!
“We chose Sarcoma because our friend and fellow runner, Dawn, is having treatment for tumours in her stomach. After her mixed chemotherapy results, an exciting drug is now being trialled and Dawn is optimistic about the future.
“We have also decided on the Lions Club because they do such great work in our local community and Fiona’s dad is a member and has supported us in getting going.”
Kate and Fiona have been running together for a number of years and are training four times a week for the run, which is approximately the same distance as a trip from Frome to Poole.
Kate added, “We do two 60-minute or speed sessions in the week, a long run up to 30 miles on a Saturday, and a 60 to 90 minute run on tired legs on Sunday! We started training in January and haven’t looked back.
“It’s going to be a hard run but we will have our support crew of Mark, Kev and Sara and supplies of food and drink for our adventure. We are hoping to do it in 11 hours.”
