An exhibition by eight artists is taking over the council building on Christchurch Street as part of the Frome Open Studios Art Trail.
Eight-Create will feature the work of eight local artists working in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, printmaking and textiles.
Sabine Abraham’s large-scale paintings vary from realism to abstract, and she enjoys using strong lines and colour, geometry, bold shapes and form. Industrial scenes, discarded objects and man-made destruction feature in her work; she is also motivated by current affairs and interprets these events in her work.
As a follower of alternative music and culture, Rosie Hart’s work is bold and contemporary, frequently touching on influences from gothic subculture, heavy metal, cult film and science fiction. She is a lover of nature and its creatures, and cats feature frequently in her work.
Lizbeth Spurgeon creates abstract landscapes influenced by the colours, lines and shapes of nature. Her oil paintings don’t replicate landscapes precisely, but emerge from stored memories and the imagination. This way of working helps her to create abstract representations of the world around us.
Sarah Truscott uses natural fibres – typically cotton, silk, merino wool and linen – to weave scarves, rugs and wall-hangings in delicately graduated colour-ways on her Scandinavian floor looms. Colour is her main inspiration, and she aims to create a feeling of movement and harmony in every piece.
Emma Tuck produces drawings, lino cuts and collagraphs which are inspired by both the beauty and the destruction of the natural world. Rare plants and weeds feature in her sensitive pen and ink drawings, while a recent series of collagraphs was created using litter from the streets of Frome.
Sue Willis makes intricate silk paintings and pen and ink drawings using patterns and structures from nature, especially circles and spirals. She likes to create small, complex designs featuring symmetry, repetition and structure.
Suzanne Woodward works on paper, using an ink resist technique to build up layers of images with water-based mixed media. Her paintings are often informed by dreams, memories, musings, ruminations, travel and stories from world mythology and folklore.
Well-known Frome artist Amy Yates will be showcasing her colourful oil paintings and mixed media pieces. She is inspired by local townscapes, portraying them in her distinctive style, using gentle gradients of colour and subtle texture.
The exhibition continues from Saturday 7th to Sunday 15th July, so please drop in and meet the artists and see their work. Refreshments will be available. The Eight-Create preview takes place on Saturday 7th July from 4–6pm – everyone is welcome.
