Extinction Rebellion staged a ‘Bee Die-in’ at the Frome Independent Market last weekend.
Organisers said, “This ‘die-in’ is not targeted at the Frome Independent Market. We are staging the die-in as an act of grief to highlight this unfolding catastrophe of cosmic proportions. Extinction Rebellion is calling on governments and corporations to act now on the climate and ecological emergency.
“Climate change, pesticides, pollution and habitat destruction – all driven by human activity, are pushing the world into the sixth mass extinction event. We are facing loss of life on a scale last seen 66 million years ago, when the dinosaurs were wiped out.
“Today we are focussing on the loss of bees; every square kilometre in the UK has lost an average of 11 species of bee and hoverfly between 1980 and 2013 (Dr Lynn Dicks, University of East Anglia). Bees are also essential for food security in the UK. The pattern of biodiversity loss is happening everywhere we look.”
